You Know You're from Sioux City when...

You know you're from Sioux City when...

*You know that Club 201 was also Lucky Lady before it (LL) moved to the old Younkers building on 4th & Douglas Sts before it became Younkers again and is now HOM Furniture. 201 is now Famous Dave's. Younkers is at the mall.

*Visiting Santa in the big corner window at the older Younkers on 4th & Pierce Sts and then eating at the restaurant inside (called the Red Rooster) was something you looked forward to every year.

*You remember that these were all stores that used to be in SC... Kalin's, Kresgee's, Woolworth, Key Drug, Three Sisters, Fantles, Fishgall's, Williges, Maury's & Raymonds, Woolco, Bostwicks, White Drug, Red Owl, Council Oak, National, Sunshine, Dave's Meat Market, European Imports, Toys-R-Us, Soo Thrifty, Bellas Hess, Klagee's, Moon Dance, Uncle Johns, The Tannery, to name just a few.

*You remember there used to be a Red Onion (Fish & chips), Kings (Cheese Frenchy ordered by phone from booth), Scottie's (Pizza burger), Shakey's Pizza (Player piano), Pizza Oven, Fife & Drum, A&W, Burger Qwik, First Ediition, Ruth's Cosina, The Paddock, Morningside Pizza, Bonanza, The Big Wheel, Sweetwater, Mr. Donut, Sioux City Bakery, The Elmwood, The Normandy, Sambo's, Aventino, Palmer House, Bishops, Brass Lantern, St. George and the Dragon, Tail & Ale, Joe Gantz, Catfish Charlie's (Corn Fritters) and many more. Also an oldie but goodie that IS still around.... Green Gables.

*You know that Sam's was a Kosher Market in the basement of the Sioux Apts., not Sam's Club and not affiliated with Wal-Mart.

*You could ice skate at the Auditorium or outside at Hubbard Park or Gilman Terrace and I'm sure a few more but I went to those two.

*You could see movies at the Orphuem, Sunset Plaza, Morningside Cinema, and the downtown Cinema II theatres, and the Gordon Twin, the Capri, and the 75 Drive Ins and you'd ride in the trunk to get in free.

*You know that not only was Children of the Corn filmed in Salix, but in a house on 8th & Jackson Sts in Sioux City .

*While in Sioux City you must have Palmer Candy's Twin Bings, Sue Bee Honey, Jolly Time Popcorn, Tastee In & Out Onion Chips & Dip, Tony's Pizza(I love Jerry's too, but Tony's beats it) a Hot Fudge Sundae at Green Gables & a Charlie Boy & Schooner at Miles.

**For those of you who are still reading this and have as much time on your hands as I apparently do, read on.**

*You know that we bottle Coca-Cola products at Chesterman, we used to make Levi's Jeans at Aalfs Manufacturing, and Blue Bunny Ice Cream is made in Le Mars. At least I think so. I know the other Blue Bunny dairy products are now Land-O-Lakes.

*You can see 3 states from the look out at Stone Park and used to go horse back riding at Hidden Valley . You might have gone swimmimng and/or fishing at James, Browns Lake , Horse Lake , Crystal Lake , the Floyd River , the Big Sioux River, and the Missouri River, (you might also be a red neck) but if you swam in the Missouri , you better not let your mom know and you know why.

*You remember the original Lief Erickson Pool was round, had a life guard tower in the deep middle that you could dive off of, and sand around the pool like a beach and you could buy all kinds of goodies from the Lemon Van that parked out front every day, or you could stop at Roe Dairy.

*You were scared to death to visit the First Bride's Grave in the Loess Hills and Lawdy's Grave in Homer with all your friends at night but you did it anyway and someone always screamed and everyone freaked and took off as fast as they could run or drive. (Yes, even you boys)

*Those crazy boys with the fast cars used to race them at the 1/4 mile and at roller coaster hill.

*You could go to the LIVE Dog Races at Sodrac (stands for S. Dakota
Racing) Park in N. Sioux and the Horse Races at Atokad (Dakota backwords) in S. Sioux.

*You can say that the people who said Taco Johns is better than Taco Belle are so right.

*You know there used to be 3 hospitals.... St. Luke's, St. Joe's, and
St. Vincent .

**Ok, even though I know I could go on for hours, I'm sure you have better things to do. Some times enough is too much already! And REALLY! Some things are private, ya know. Besides I have to decide if I want to order Tony's Pizza or go get Tastees and onion chips.
Hmmmmmmmmm

Jim,

That was great!  I had forgotten a few of those names.  You forgot one though.  When we come back we always have to go to Milwaukee Weiner House!!

And, I didn't realize Tony's pizza was still around.  I am with you.  That was my favorite.  Is it still on Pierce Street?

OK, I confess...I didn't make up the list.  I just copied and pasted it from an email from my wife.  I would have added Milwaukee Wiener House or Coney Island, El Fredos Pizza to me is much better than Tony's but Tony's did have good pasta and sauce.  Sneaky's chicken is another one to add.  Sad news is that the old Sinclair gas station at 18th and Hamilton, where we used to get a lot of beer in high school, has been torn down.
