Historic Morningside

NEWS FROM CLASSMATE DON HANNA ON THE NEWEST DEVELOPMENTS OF MORNINGSIDE SCHOOLS

Several years ago, the voters of Sioux City approved a 1% local option sales tax, to specifically apply to repair, maintenance and construction of Sioux City schools. It was specific in that none of the money was to be used toward curriculum or salaries (that comes from our sky-high property taxes).
Over the years, in addition to impressive additions for new science labs and classrooms to the 3 public high schools, we've built a new North Middle School, West Middle School, completely rebuilt and expanded East Middle School (formerly Hayworth Jr) and new grade schools all over town.

We've closed Joy, Longfellow, Whittier and Washington grade schools in Morningside, plus most of the old grade schools on the west and north sides of town. Joy and Longfellow have been combined to become Spalding Park Elementary School and Whittier and Washington combined to become Morningside Elementary School, each with an enrollment of about 600 students, which is about double the size of the individual schools. They couldn't continue the Washington or Whittier names because the population of either school wouldn't like that, so the school board came up with the most prosaic, unimaginative name they could think of - Morningside Elementary School, on the site of old Washington Elementary. I apologize for editorializing - but the  didn't ask my opinion for a new name.

Here is a remarkable video of the history of Grace Methodist Church.  It recounts the original buildings that were used to worship in from the church's founding to the present.  There are wonderful and historic documentations of the treasured old church that burned down on January 31 1957 as well as delightful photos of some of it's members.  If you'll stay with the video, halfway through is a sequence on the building activities, including Sunday School Class.  In this photo you will recognize the faces of many of our classmates, including:  Connie Carter, Karen Karst, Jean Jackson, Dean Scheibe, Janice Winter, Jolynn Gregalunas and Jim Marbach.
