Dennis Lee Hovland, 63, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with Paul Spaulding officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Dennis was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Sioux City, the son of Alfred and Nina (Pilelo) Hovland. He was raised in Sioux City and attended school at East High School, graduating in 1961. He continued his education at Augustana College, receiving his bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked at the family business, Jonee Manufacturing in Le Mars, Iowa, which was his passion and was a sales manager at Sioux City Woolco.

He married Marcia Kaiser on July 3, 1965, in Yankton, S.D. He entered the U.S. Army in 1967, serving in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. He was stationed at Fort Mead, Md. While living in New Jersey, he worked as a sales manager of Bamburger's of New Jersey. They moved back to Sioux City in 1997. He became a manager of the family business until it closed in 1993. He also worked as a local realtor.

He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church. He loved the arts, traveling, dancing and music. He had a great spirit and was full of life. He was an Eagle Scout. He coached his son's competitive soccer team and was a den leader for his son's Boy Scout troop.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia Hovland of Sioux City; a son and his wife, Mitch and Angie Hovland of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Morgana Hovland of Des Moines; his mother, Nina Hovland of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Linda and Ron Trobaugh of Urbandale, Iowa; a sister-in-law and her husband, Janet and Larry Ayers of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three nephews; and a niece.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Marvin Hovland; and maternal aunts and uncles, Alice and Harold Grubel and Jennie and Michael Leonard.
