1943-2010


Dean R. Scheibe, age 66, passed away on January 13, 2010, of a heart attack.

Dean was born in 1943 to Native American parents and was raised by Kermit and Erma Scheibe in Sioux City, Iowa.

After graduating from high school, he joined the Army and was stationed in Germany as a medic.

He soon after attended a wooden boat building school in England. Later he lived in Puerto Rico and learned Spanish in the building trade. He was a talented and skilled woodworker.

Dean moved to Port Townsend in 1975 from Seattle, where he was working and attending Seattle Central College.

In 1986, he wed Gloria in Cebu City, Philippines, and together they raised two children in Port Townsend.

He was a cycling enthusiast, having cycled solo from Port Townsend to San Francisco and through Tibet. He collected antiques and established business ties in China while teaching himself to speak Mandarin.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; his son, Michael; daughter, Maria; brothers, Milo Mendenhall, Harry Bedard; and sisters, Janette Bedard and Phyllis Ward.

Dean is predeceased by a sister, Peggy Jean Schutte.

A memorial service was held at noon, Saturday, January 23, at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Parish.
