In Memory

Kirk Reynolds - Class Of 1979

Kirk Owen Reynolds (age 57) of Smyrna, DE, died on Saturday, July 28, 2018.

Kirk graduated from Smyrna High School, where he directed the Marching Band as Drum Major and played on the Varsity Baseball Team. He worked for more than ten years at The Wayside Inn, starting in his early teens.

Kirk had a long-standing, decorated service to the Delaware Department of Correction, retiring as a Staff Lieutenant after a 27-year career. As a professional member of the American Correctional Association, Kirk was first employed at Gander Hill Prison and later at Delaware Correctional Center.

He was a baseball enthusiast, whether playing or watching the game. Kirk’s motto on the field was “as long as you can hit, they’ll find a place for you.” Kirk played baseball at West Chester University, Delaware State University and Del Tech Community College. After playing collegiate ball, Kirk played in the Del-Mar Baseball Association, the Eastern Shore League, and later pitched in the Central Delaware Men’s Senior Baseball League, a league for baseball players aged 30 and over. Despite being a native Delawarean and living near Baltimore and Philadelphia, Kirk was a fervent Atlanta Braves fan. He loved nothing more than heckling his mother – an equally fervent Phillies fan – about the National League East standings.

His other interests included music, theater, old movies, wildlife, hunting, dining, comedy, farming and living “on the other side of the highway.”

Kirk was preceded in death by his father, Aaron T. Reynolds and a nephew, Nathaniel Qi. He is survived by his mother, H. Marie Reynolds, a brother, Keith Reynolds (Karen Kurtz) of Wilmington, DE, sisters Janice Qi and Laura Jo Permelia (James) both of Smyrna, a daughter, Ashley Reynolds Desrosiers (Paul) of Brookline, MA, a son, Daniel Reynolds (Lauren) of Broadway, VA, and several nieces and nephews.

A special thank you goes out to Veronica and Cheryl Weaver for their compassionate care and extraordinary understanding.

The funeral will be held at Faries Funeral Home (29 S. Main St, Smyrna, DE) on Friday, August 3 at 11 am. Calling hours will be held the hour prior to the service (10 – 11 am). Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Kirk’s name to Delaware Aglands Preservation Foundation c/o Delaware Department of Agriculture (2320 S. DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901).
