Salvatore A. Petrillo of Somerset, former principal of Somerset High School, died Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 71.

Born in Fall River, Mr. Petrillo graduated from Durfee High School, where he was secretary of the National Honor Society, yearbook editor, and captain of the basketball team in 1946. He attended the University of Vermont, where he earned bachelor's degrees in English and science. He received a master's degree in education from Boston University in 1958.

He served as a lieutenant in the Army during the Korean War and was the undefeated middleweight boxing champion during his service.
