Gayle Johnson (DeLoss)

Today I received a note from Lianne Rogers Selzer with a check for the reunion scheduled for June.  I just wanted to cry.  She was the first to respond to the reunion posting and that is so like her.  Lianne has always been the Pep in our Pep Club.  She made everything she touched fun!  And I know that she has been so deeply affected by Larry Johnson's passing.  He was the party organizer.

Sometimes there is just no answers for saddness.  I am so thankful to have the bright memories of class members who didn't hesitate to enjoy their time with us.  Remember the smiles and the laughter!

Gayle

I don't get on this message board much - actually not at all until now!  Am I really the first one to be posting something this day (8/15/2017) when the last post was back in 2009?  Or is it just that I am so tech un-savvy that I missed everything else?

I am looking forward to our 50th next summer!  What were we all doing this day 50 years ago?  Enjoying our last summer before our senior year?   I was lifeguarding at the Spencer Municipal Swimming Pool (RIP).

I hope to see everyone next summer.  We have come to the age where we should not take anything for granted!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHRIS ENGER!

Penn - Thanks for sending the Reunion dates out early.  Looking forward to visiting with everyone  in August 2018 and reading updates on the forum!

Your note reminded me to go through my HS scrapbook - and to add some photos to my page of things you might enjoy seeing, or not! Enjoy...

Thanks to the committee for planning the big 50. On a personal and selfish note I would be more likely to come back for it if it was end of August or September. Also hope we take advantage of the 3ed best recreational lake

Thanks to the committee for planning the big 50. On a personal and selfish note I would be more likely to come back for it if it was end of August or September. Also hope we take advantage of the 3rd best recreational lake in the US and incorporate some of the unique memory opportunities there like Boji Bay and the downtown Spencer mural at the car museum that is close by. Hope all are well.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone but I'm sure most of you don't remember me, after all 50 years does a job on our brains! The years go by so fast it just doen't seem possible that 50 years ago we were finally graduateing. I'm sure we all look the same :} See you all next year!

It has come to my attention that one of our classmates has recently been honored in his current town for over 21 years of meritorious military service.    Jerrry Bjornstad is one of our own Class of '68 and North School grad.   (Yeah   North Schoolers!!!)  Lt. Col. U.S. Air Force Jerry was honored by being named a Distinguished Veteran in Lowell, Oregon and was chosen based on his service around the world!!!    Of course, it doesn't hurt to be handsome and courageous and humble and one heck of a nice guy from Spencer!     Check out his story at:

Hello, Everyone,

March 1st was the deadline for responses regarding our 50th class reunion.  It is important to get a realistic idea of how many people will be attending and which events people want to attend.  This will determine the cost per person and per event for the reunion.  As of today, we have about 40 responses.  If you are planning on attending the reunion in August and have not returned your response, please do so right away.  Thank you.

I am currently on a workcation in the Mojave Desert.  Located on Route 66 in Barstow, CA.  Our host is Ty DeLoss, the coolest cat around and the original Fonz.  Driving the 66 loop here is like returning to our glory days in the 60's.  Fosters Freeze is across the street and it is the all American malt shop/burger place.  Classic cars replicated and on display and it seems like a Chevy heaven.  There are some Fords too.  The weather is much more enjoyable than our current Iowa weather.  Highs have been in the low 80's and the nights are cool.  Vegetation is blooming and spring flowers can be found numerous places.  This scene reminds me of Toby Shine's Classic Car Museum on Highway 86 at the Lakes.  But it is nice to be out in the elements here.  The summer months would be unbearably hot for me.  Since Ty is 11 years older than Vaughn, this has been a winter destination for many years.  All this brings me to the realization that SHS Class of 68 will be celebrating our 50th reunion in August.  What an opportunity to revisit favorite memories while we are healthy enough to move and think for ourselves.  Let's share some history and share what makes our lives special today.  Looking forward to a great reunion!

50 years ago, we were getting ready for the Sunday Evening Bacalaureate Service at the High School Fieldhouse, 8:00 PM - June 2, 1968.  Monday - June 3, 1968 - 8:00 PM Senior Class Night at the High School Fieldhouse. Wednesday - Eighty-Second Annual Commencement at Spencer High School.

Mr. Tschirki had sent us a special bulletin in April, telling us when and where to show up and how to dress.  We were to "acknowledge (his instructions) in every way."  We were not to chew gum. Boys were told not to wear coats under the gowns; girls were encourage to "wear white clothes under the gowns...as even pastels would show through."  Also, we were not to wear dresses with full skirts. Hats were to be worn straight and well down on the forehead. "DIGNITY SHOULD PREVAIL IN EVERY WAY."

Have been enjoying reading updates and looking forward to seeing everyone at our 50th reunion!

JA

Thanks,

I have to admit I was somewhat hestitant to come back for many reasons but I am very thankful that I did. It was nice to take a small trip into the past, specially when some of the memories weren"t so nice but the nice ones came flowing to the front of my memory. Thanks to the people that made me feel very welcome, I very much appreicate all the kindness. I also thank everyone for making it fun for my daughters, they also had a great time. A big thanks to all the people that worked on the team that put it all together and the two that went alittle above to make sure that the rest of us had a good time, I"m here to say you did your job WELL!!! I hope each and everyone of you are very BLESSED in the next five years and beyond so we can have another opportunity to reconnect at the next one. It really was a blast from from the past!!!

Still so blessed by my family. My dear mom turned 98 this Feb 16th. She is doing well and as sharp as a tack. She is a joy to all of us!!
