This year's theme for the 1991 Capitoline is CHANGES which is appropriate for many reasons.
Changes are constantly a part of our world. Changes occur in our seasons as well as our customs and concerns. The sixties were known as a time or activism, while the seventies and eighties were the "Now" and "Me" generations. What willl be in store for the nineties? How will this decade be remembered? Hopefully, it will be a time of sharing and cooperation to solve the many problems that confront us- education, environment, pollution, etc...
Bob Dylan sang "the times, they are changing" while Michael Jackson's lyrics state "I'm startin' with the man in the mirror. I'm askin' him to change his way". It is the duty of each new generation to make the changes that best mirror their view of the way the world should be.
Already, great changes in our world have occured in our new decade- student protests in China, the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the unification of Germany, and the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq.
This year brings changes to our Illinois state government with the election of a new governor to succeed James Thompson who has been in office as long as most of the students at SHS have been alive.
Closer to home, we find that high school is a time of dramatic changes for everyone. Just as each class changes and matures, so do the individuals. Changes from adolescence to adulthood occur at this time. Students experience changes in their thoughts and concerns from childish things to more serious issues.
Specific changes here at SHS in the nineties include the addition of new faculty, a coeducational cheerleading squad, a girls' soccer team, SADD, Key, S.T.A.G.E. and FANS Clubs and a school newspaper class.
