58 Banquet Decorating Committee luncheon at Bellows Falls Country Club

The Decorating Committee met for lunch once again at the BFCC on Thursday, May 23rd.  It was a good meeting and a nice lunch.  Priscilla Petraska was kind enough to take pictures.

May 18

60th Springfield Class of 1958 Reunion Planning Meeting

On May 18, 2018 at 9:15 am a meeting was held at the Springfield Police Station on Clinton Street.

Present:  Vaughn Hadwen, Ronnie Currier, Gene Adams, Clarence Abbott, Paul Patraska, Judy Benjamin, Kay Putnam, Cynthia Ploof, Natalie Brown, Joanie Greenwood and Lorraine, Marlene and Priscilla Millay.

Priscilla read the letter that Fred received from Barb Greer thanking the Class of ‘58 for inviting her to attend the Reunion.  She will be joining us Friday Night at Gene’s home.  We are very pleased that Jim Matthews and Ike Larabee are planning to join us at the banquet on Saturday.

Communications Committee: Priscilla shared the following information from Fred Bock.  “This committee has contacted by phone all classmates to whom registration information was sent by US mail with pretty positive response. However, a minority has returned their form to Martha for entry in the data base. Responses in either written or electronic form are required by May 26th if one is to have reservations for either the Banquet or Hosted Breakfast.”

Event Registration: “Registration is going a little more slowly than hoped. Since Martha will not be making entries again until the 24th we’ll be flying blind” in that mailed registrations received between now and then won’t show up in the statistics. Current registration status for the banquet is 49.”  (Priscilla read the list from Fred on who has registered and who we have not heard from.)

Program Committee Update:  Carol Bock from last month:  “The welcoming comments are written. We will keep it short.”  Also since the Bellows Falls Country Club has a means to connect to the internet, the plan is to have a laptop available so that anything on the Class Site can be viewed by anyone interested.

Float Committee Update:  Ronnie shared a drawing of the “wave” to be attached to the front of the boat and the great sign of the “SS MINNOW” to be on either side of the boat.

Assignment:     Vaughn is looking into obtain12 bales of hay to be used for seating on the long trailer.

Next Meeting:  Friday, May 25th at 1:00 PM at Gene’s home to work on the Float

Decorating Committee Update:  Marlene shared the glasses to be used for the center pieces for the tables. She also noted that she would like to have green and white balloons again. Kay is working on the “60” sign. Priscilla Patraska and Cynthia Ploof brought in strings of small white lights to use for decorating.

Assignment:  Kay is going to look into finding something to attach the Name Tags to the attendees.

Next Meeting: We will meet for lunch on May 31st at the BFCC at noon to review the space and make last   minute decisions on decorations.

May 4

On Friday, May 4th several of us met at Gene Adams including Gene, Clarence, Paul, Ronnie, Cynthia, Judy B., Dottie and Priscilla.  The boat Gene found is awesome and several classmates will be able to ride in it.  If more room is needed, Gene has the trailer that we used five years ago that will hold several classmates.  It was decided that since the theme is:  “Sea Ventures-Make a Wave” that we will have blue cloth around the boat representing the ocean.  Ronnie is designing a big wave to use at the front of the boat to hide the post from the trailer to the boat. The left over green and white material will be used on the second trailer if needed as well as our banners.  Otherwise there is not much materials from the last float to use.

Cynthia and Judy are part of the Decorating Committee and they have not seen the space at the BFFC.  An outing will be planned to do that for those who would like to see the space in the next week or so.

Class breakfast at Riverside Restaurant on May 18th with a meeting at the Springfield Police Station at 9:30 am on the same day.

Registrations for the Banquet coming in slowly---please do so as quickly as you can so we will know who is coming and what activities they want to be involved with as well as your dinner choice.

Priscilla

Also the mugs were delivered in Vermont shortly after noon today. Pictures below show the logo and text sides of the actual article.

April 20

SHS Class of 1958 Meeting of April 20 1018

Those in attendance were:  Clarence Abbott, Eugene Adams, Priscilla Millay, Ronnie Currier, Vaughan Hadwen, Martha Lucas, Natalie Brown, Dottie Richardson, Marlene Millay, Judy Benjamin and Paul Petraska.   Meeting began at 9:15 a.m.

Discussed and determined to ask spouses of deceased classmates to attend this year's banquet:  Ike Larabee, Jim Matthews and Barb Greer. The same invitation would be sent to them as to the classmates and they would be expected to pay for their meal.

Fred and Carol Bock say that their program will be short.  It will be presented between 5 and 6 o'clock on Saturday, June 16th at the Bellows Falls Country Club.

The boat that is being used for the float is 18' long.  Maybe six people can ride in the boat and it was suggested they dress as the cast of the Gilligan's Island television show.  The trailer could hold 15-20 or so people.

It was decided to obtain hay bales to use instead of chairs.  We plan to cover them with the green fabric we used around the perimeter of our last float.  Discussion of "motor power" gave us several options to be decided by the guys of the class.  Ronnie has made 15 fish and he shared several of them. Great job!!!!!!!

Participants, walking and riding, should wear either a '58 tee shirt or a tropical print shirt.  Priscilla will pickup some leis at the dollar store for people wearing tee shirts to wear.

We classmates are to meet at Eugene's in Perkinsville on Friday, May 4th at 1 p.m. to decide how we'll decorate the float boat and trailer.  Eugene has some items in the attic that we can utilize.

The decorating committee is suggesting round tables with centerpieces.  Vaughan has offered some glass jars for this purpose.  Priscilla will check out available tables at Bellows Falls Country Club.  Approved of Nancy Moore Shank sending us the pages from her yearbook of the pictures of classmates to use as we wish.  Marlene shared a picture of the “60th” that Kay Putnam is planning to make to add to the center pieces.  Looks nice.

Priscilla is to meet with the person in charge of food at BFCC on Monday.  Looks like the cost  will be +/- $37 per person.  This includes appetizers, salad, entrée and dessert.  Entrée choices would include Haddock, Roast Beef and Chicken Cordon Bleu.

The registration form will have a place for donations.  A Class of '58 mug, shown below, will be available for purchase -- $5 to $6 range.

Time schedule for June 16 banquet at BFCC:

  • Register     3:30 - 4 p.m.
  • Appetizers  4 -5 p.m
  • Program 5-6 p.m.
  • Dinner        6 p.m.

Diana Lupien Bacon is providing classmates with a breakfast buffet at the BFCC between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. -- a generous gesture!!

Friday, June 15 schedule:

  • Usual breakfast at 8 a.m. at Riverside Restaurant
  • After breakfast:  Tour of River Street, Park Street School and/or walk through the town of Springfield
  • Meet at Eugene's at 5 p.m. for pizza and last minute float building

Priscilla shared a copy of the classmate contact information that Fred has and the plan is to have everyone check their information to see if it is correct and there will be printouts available for those who do not have computer access.

Respectfully submitted -- Martha Lucas

Next Meeting:

60th Springfield Class of 1958 Reunion
Meeting February 16, 2018

The meeting was held at the Springfield Police Station on Clinton Street at 9:15 am.

Present:  Vaughn, Ronnie, Eugene, Clarence, Paul, David & Kay, Marlene, Martha, Lorraine, Kaye Dwinell and Priscilla

Booklet Committee/Updating Profile Information:  Priscilla shared a copy of the contact and profile information form that Fred has US mailed to those who have not joined the Class of ’58 Web Site.  It is important for all of us to fill this out quickly and submit to Fred. There were some present who have not done this; we received more promises that they would do so.

Fred asked me to relay to the class that a guest has signed in to the Web Site twice in the last week and he wanted them to know that they can find their name on the classmate list and create a profile. One would have to set up another e-mail address (theirname@myemail.com) as well as a password. No one knew who this might have been.

Will You Be There:  So far 37 have registered on the site that they plan to attend the banquet on Saturday, June 16th.   Priscilla took a poll of  those planning to attend but who have not registered.  They are:  Bruce & Gail Fairbank, Eddie Jalgeski, Clarence & Kathy Abbott, Eugene Adams +1, Vaughn Hadwen, Kay Dwinell, and Kay & David Putnam.

Program Committee Update:  Carol Bock from last month:  “The welcoming comments are written. We will keep it short.”  Also since the Bellows Falls Country Club has a means to connect to the internet, the plan is to have a laptop available so that anything on the Class Site can be viewed by anyone interested.

Float Committee Update:  Ronnie shared a drawing of the proposed float the “SS MINNOW”.  Either a real boat or one made from chicken wire or thin plywood will be placed on the same trailer we used last year. There will be tall mast and a steering wheel handled by Captain Paul. A lively discussion followed as to what materials we should start collecting.  We will need sticks for fish poles and sturdy cardboard (maybe empty banana boxes) to cut out the fish.  If we use chicken wire we will need brown paper for stuffing---Martha has a rotary cutter.

Assignment:     Paul looking into the old boat.

Dottie to start to gather the banana boxes

Priscilla to check on restrictions for the height of the mast

Decorating Committee Update:  Marlene reported that the center pieces for the tables are pretty well set.  She will need glass jars and Vaughn volunteered to bring her a sample of what he has at home.  She also noted that she would like to have green and white balloons again and Eugene is checking on this. Several suggestions were made as to what we might have for favors/memorabilia to tie in with either our 60th and/or the theme of the parade “Sea Ventures-make a wave” or our float the “SS Minnow”.

Assignment:  All think of other possibilities for discussion next month.

Food Committee: We will be meeting with the caterer in April.

Oral Communications Committee:  As the time grows closer to June this committee will be more active.  Gail Fairbank and Kay Putnam expressed interest in helping out.  John Follett also said not to forget him to help out.

Anticipated Events for the reunion weekend:  It was suggested that we plan a tour of the Old Fellows Building, the Library, Main Street of Springfield, Observatory at the Hartness House.  So far we have the following schedule:

Friday, June 15th

  • Class breakfast at Riverside Restaurant
  • Finishing touches on class float late afternoon/early in evening
  • Bruce Fairbank, DJ volunteered to play music selections from 1950-1960 during the class float building night.  This was approved by those present as long as the music was not too loud.

Saturday, June 16th

  • Parade in the morning
  • Banquet in the afternoon/evening

Sunday, June 17th

  • Hosted breakfast/brunch at the Bellows Falls Country Club

Assignment:  Think of other suggestions for activities on Friday.

Next Meeting:  Friday, March 16th at 9:15 am at the Springfield Police Headquarters on Clinton Street in their conference Room.  Marlene Millay volunteered to coordinate this meeting.

Priscilla Millay

60th Springfield Class of 1958 Reunion
Meeting January 19, 2018

The meeting was held at Riverside Restaurant. Those present were:  Joanie Greenwood, Kay and David Putnam, Marlene Millay, Snookie Jarvis, Judy Benjamin, Dottie and Dennis Richardson, Martha Lucas, Gail and Bruce Fairbank, Ronnie Currier, Eugene Adams, John Follett, David Regan, Paul and Priscilla Petraska, Clarence Abbott and Priscilla Millay.

Updating Profile Information:  The Class of ’58 has a website. Among other things the primary focus is the classmate profile that includes contact information along with responses to various questions and pictures. Priscilla shared a copy of the contact and profile information form that Fred has US mailed to those who have not joined the site and via e-mail to those who have.  It is important for all of us to fill this out quickly and submit to Fred.

Booklet Committee Update:  The Booklet Committee is of the opinion that a printed booklet for the 60th reunion is not needed but rather the class site can fulfill this purpose. The time, effort and cost to make the booklet was substantial. For our sixtieth reunion this committee is encouraging all classmates ---those who have joined the class site and those who have not to update their profile information.  Fred has sent letters via US Mail to all who have not joined the site encouraging them to fill out the information and he will add this info onto the site. Dottie expressed her disappointment in not having a booklet printed out as she enjoyed having them in the past and kept the booklet right near her desk.

Program Committee Update:  Carol Bock sent this information:  “The welcoming comments are written. We will keep it short.”  Also since the Bellows Falls Country Club has a means to connect to the internet, the plan is to have a laptop available so that anything on the Class Site can be viewed by anyone interested.

Float Committee Update:  Martha Lucas shared a suggestion from Bobbi White for a possible theme for the float—“Little Fishes in the Sea”.  The guys finished their breakfast early and put their heads together and came up with the theme for the float:  SS MINNOW.  Great!

Decorating Committee Update:  Now that the theme has been established, this committee will begin to think about what decorations and memorabilia they would like to have.  Also suggestions/thoughts from anyone would be appreciated.  They can submit their suggestions to Marlene Millay who is the chairperson of this committee.

Food Committee: The two Priscilla’s are on this committee and Snookie Jarvis volunteered to be part of this committee.

Guests/Spouses:  We hope to have at least 70 people attending the Banquet.  Hopefully, this happens as we have had good response in the past.  A question was asked if we should send an invitation to include spouses from our deceased classmates.  Following discussion, it was suggested that we wait on this until we see how many classmates we do get. Also at this time we all agreed not to open up the invitation to other classes.

Registrations:  To date 31 classmates/spouses have responded to the Web Site:  “Will You Be There?”

Class Breakfast:  Thanks again to Diana Bacon for sponsoring the Class Breakfast on Sunday, June 17th at the Bellows Falls Country Club.  This will be a brunch buffet event.  Additional information will follow in the near future.

Music /Pictures at the Banquet:  So far most classmates are saying they would rather not have music at the banquet because it does interfere with conversations.

Next Meeting:  Friday, February 16th around 9:00 to 9:15 am at the Springfield Police Headquarters on Clinton Street in their conference Room.  It was felt that this would be more convenient for all to attend.  Dottie Richardson volunteered to have a meeting in the future at her home in Perkinsville if needed.

January 17, 2018

Proposed agenda for 1958 Class Meeting, January 19th.

As discussed last month we are planning to have a group meeting at my home (27 Delphian Road) following our breakfast on Friday, January 19th for those who can make it.  Below is an outline of the agenda.  If  you cannot attend and for those who are on our website---we welcome your input.

  1. Filling out profile information.
  2. Inviting guests (Spouses of those who have passed away.  What do we do if we do not have the at least 70 classmates attending the banquet?  Other people from other classes—1957 or 1959/1960?)
  3. Class breakfast on Sunday, June 17th.  We can have it a buffet breakfast at the Bellows Falls Country Club. (This would be good for the Decorating Committee as they would not have to dismantle their decorations until after breakfast on Sunday.
  4. Update from the Decorating Committee.
  5. Update from the Float Committee.  Need a theme so we can register our float.
  6. Update from the Program Committee---Fred and Carol.
  7. What about music?  What about pictures?
  8. Other?

Pris

December 15, 2017

Martha stated that she has heard from Patchy Williams See, Joel Chapman and Bobbi Crossman White indicating that they are planning to attend the Reunion. We tentatively set a date of January 19th for a meeting to discuss ideas for the Float and have an update from the Decorating Committee.  The theme this year is “Sea Ventures-Make a Wave”.  But being an anniversary year for us, we are not limited to that theme.

November 17, 2017

Priscilla received a phone call from Diana Lupien Bacon and she confirmed that she is looking forward to the reunion and would like to sponsor the class breakfast on Sunday morning June 17, 2018!  So nice to have an activity that will allow classmates to continue their association with each other as we don’t see most of them but every five years.

Also Priscilla is looking into another couple of possibilities for lodging to add to the list.

Float Committee continues to discuss what they might do for the parade.  The plan is to have a meeting in late January or early February with as many classmates and committees to provide updates and make serious plans.

Booklet:  Not sure this will happen unless we have more volunteers to help out and decide what classmates would like to have as a memento of our 60th!!!

Communications:  When it is time to begin registrations for this event---more people might be needed to call classmates to provide information and obtain information.  Fred is doing a great job with the Web Site but still need more classmates to check in with it!  He has offered to be available to those who might need a little extra help!

October 20, 2017

This is a list of hotels and B&B’s in the Springfield/Chester area for our out of town classmate’s information.  Most all of them accept reservations with cancellation within a week of arrival date.

Other news is the Float Committee has been gathering ideas for our float and Eugene will be having a meeting shortly at his house for this committee.

We are considering having a meeting sometime early next year to coordinate all committees.

Priscilla

September 15, 2017

At the monthly class breakfast Marlene, who is in charge of the decorating committee, shared samples of possible center pieces for the tables.

Once again Diana Lupien Bacon has offered to do breakfast Sunday Morning. We were all very enthused by her generous offer! However, we want her to be there also!  Cynthia is planning to contact Diana and we will be checking into possible places at a later date.

Pris checked with those present who are not on the website, to see if they were agreeable to receiving updates and information regarding the 60th Reunion at the class breakfasts instead of US mailing the information.  They all agreed.

There was nothing new from the float committee at this time.

August 18, 2017

Priscilla  held a short meeting at the breakfast about the progress we have made so far in planning our 60th class reunion next June 16, 2018. We have been able to reserve the BF Country Club for our banquet afternoon/evening event.  She had a list of several different committees to sign up for that Fred had laid out which went around the table for people to sign up for. The Float and Decorating Committees have a Chairperson identified to have a meeting with their committee in the next couple of months.  A few more volunteers are needed.  See attached list.  Priscilla plans to send the Committee Chairperson a list of who is on their committee and contact information.

Natalie has been able to contact quite a few classmates, i.e.--- Sandra Thomas Pickering, Sylvia Clark Combs, Joyce Simonds Breault, Alice Cluff Ingalls, etc. Sylvia had moved but through perseverance she was tracked down

August 3, 2017

For the past week Natalie, I and a few others have been contacting classmates to let them know that Priscilla Woychosky Millay has already started to pull us together to plan for the 60th reunion and that we will be using the class website as much as possible to communicate goings on and eventually register for events. The more we can use electronic means will enable us to reduce costs associated with using the US mail. My Scottish ancestry, recently confirmed by DNA analysis, compels me to do this.

July 28, 2017

It turns out that neither the Fullerton Inn nor the Chester American Legion will be available so yesterday Dottie, Natatlie, Lorraine, Marlene and Priscilla visited the Bellows Falls Country Club and approved of the space. It will hold over 100; they have banquet tables, plenty of light, a deck, a bar, lovely scenery and also good feedback on the restaurant food. The banquet will take place on Saturday, June 16, 2018 sometime during the afternoon through evening for about 6 hours with the exact start and ending times yet to be determined.
