1989 to 1991 was very blurry. I was into the rock and roll lifestyle, dropping out of college, motorcycles, electric guitars, and eventually rehab. Decided it was better to fade away gracefully than die young.
1992-1996. Went back to college, finished up at St Olaf double major in English and Classics. Spent a month looking at ruins in Greece. Looking forward to new job as a barista.
1997 to 1999. Avoided employment by going to graduate school in English at the University of St Thomas, reading lots of the great books, and writing lots of papers on obscure topics. Didn’t take Mr. Linnea’s advice that one should never go into teaching. As Walt Whitman said, “Damnation, thy name is school teaching!”
2000 to 2002. Got married, honeymoon in Ixtapa Mexico, remodeled an arts and crafts home in Robbinsdale, got a dog, got a real job doing statistics at Fairview Health Services, daughter Kira Eve born. Took up running. Studied the mandolin.
2003-2004. Son Logan Micah is born. Starting to get blurry again due to lack of sleep. Grateful for the many blessings in my life but shocked that parenting is so hard.
2005 – 2008. Another new job at Fairview. Changing lots of diapers and picking up lots of toys. Back injury, no more running. Co-chaired referendum for Robbinsdale Area Schools.
2009. Counting blessings that I have a job, home, family and health. Realizing that inner peace and service to others is much more important than acquiring stuff and getting caught up in my own drama.
2014. Still need to work on the above theme mentioned for 2009. Have a new job in Los Angeles at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Was thinking the other day that it would be fun to run away and become a pirate, but this would set a bad example for my kids.
2016. Should have ran away and became a pirate, but I'm a Capricorn who is invested in home and my family. Now a divorced single parent. Advice: don't marry someone because they are cute. Warning: whatever trauma you have suppressed from your childhood most likely will be re-enacted in your grown-up life with your spouse and children, but if you pay attention to your life, you might learn what's really important. Hopefully you have learned these two things by now. I moved back to Robbinsdale, Minnesota working at North Memorial Medical Center.
2019. New dog, new partner (a true friend whom I like). There are now teenagers in my house (payback sucks). Enjoying playing Bach on the piano and reading dystopian novels rather than doing social media (just re-read 1984). I want to run away and either become a hermit or start a social justice movement and overthrow the system with love and non-violence. Real jobs still stink.
