School Story:

My favorite elementary school memory is that of performing the "Wizard of Oz" in Mrs. Burnett's second grade class at Buerkle Street. The cast was me as Dorothy, Derek B. as the Scarecrow, Paul H. as the Tin Man, Jimmy H. as the Lion, Angie as the Wicked Witch, and there were various others -- I think Tim B. was one of those flying monkey senechals. Whose mommy has a picture? That is the only year of my 42 where my hair was cut short!

In high school, I laughed the most in Mrs. Dardenne's World History class immediately after lunch. She was very pregnant that year. John M. would be poker-faced as he unwrapped crinkly candy. John C. would wander in "I'm not tardy!" wearing flip-flops. One day, the guys (I was the only "thug-ette" in this class first semester) even rigged a bathroom stall door in the room so when teacher waddled in late from the lounge, she had to move the door out of the way. Kudos to Tim B., Bobby D., Richard D., Jason S., and the Johns for the fun. Penny W. moved into the class with me second semester.

The day after the tornado (5-11-08), one of five large downed trees at our house, dogs on the loose as fences were crushed by fallen limbs. Coffee Pup (at left) is our three-legged dog who pulled himself loose from a beaver trap on the bayou. We have four dogs and two cats (one inside and one outside).

Tornado damage at church in the Family Life Center being constructed. Days 2 & 3 of recovery for my extended family were entirely spent bagging up wet insulation inside/outside and sweeping away insulation, debris and glass from interior. Having no cubed ice for several days was an unexpected hardship.

Hope in Aunt Diane's (my sister's mother-in-law)flower bed in Iowa where we trek EVERY Fourth of July. There are fireflies instead of mosquitoes, and we wrap up in beach towels to keep warm while watching two towns' fireworks below hillside. Following a parade is a porch picnic where U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley blends in with the small-town people of Waverly and Shell Rock.
