Tony "Pops" Shuman (Social Studies)

Ronald Keith "Tony" Shuman, 72, died January 21, 2004, following a long illness. Mr. Shuman was born July 2, 1931, in Hastings, Wetzel County. He graduated from Pine Grove High School and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After service, he attended Glenville State College, graduating in 1957. A retired teacher with experience in Canton, Ohio, Calhoun County and Braxton County, Shuman more recently served on the Braxton County Board of Education. During his early teaching career, Shuman was active as an organizer for the concerns of educators and served as chairperson of the West Virginia Education Association's Legislative Committee. During his teaching career, he served as freshman football coach and assistant wrestling coach at Braxton County High School. Shuman is survived by his wife, Shirley James Shuman of Gassaway; daughter, Mary Anne Backus of Frametown; and sons, Brian Mark Shuman of Ronceverte, WV, Christopher Ronald Shuman of Gassaway, Philip Allan Shuman of Gassaway, Thomas Keith Shuman of Gassaway, and Joel James Shuman of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by twenty grandchildren. Visitation was held at the Gassaway Baptist Church, Friday, January 23 from 6:30 til 9 p.m. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. at the Gassaway Baptist Church on Saturday, January 24 with Rev. Allen Donaldson officiating. Burial followed in the James Family Cemetery at Frametown. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Tony Shuman Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of Gassaway, P.O. Box 40, Gassaway, WV 26624. Richard M. Roach Funeral Home handled the arrangements for the Shuman Family.
