School Story

Along with Michael Tobin, I was one of two Swarthmoreans (can't bring myself to say "Swattie" as it was a word we never used) to follow professor Simone Smith's advice and head to Grenoble for our junior year. It was probably the year that shaped my life more than any spent on campus could have done (especially in the time of strikes and protests). I was a student-teacher of English at a girl's high school in Grenoble that year, and haven't stopped working in French-American education since!

Summarize what you've been up to for the last 50 years.

Enjoyed a long, fulfilling career teaching at the Lycee Francais de New York, and I have continued doing some educational consulting (College Counseling, school advising, workshops for young musicians among others). Also founded and am president of the French Heritage Language Program, a support program for Francophone immigrants in New York, Boston, Miami (and now Maine). Other French-American notes: Serve on the Board of the American University in Paris, along with fellow Swarthmore Alumni Gil Kemp (72) and Gretchen Handwerger (56) and soon to be joined by Marcia Grant (62) who will serve as interim Provost at AUP starting in September.
As a result of all this work with French-American education, i was deeply honored to receive the Legion of Honor from France in May 2016.
I thought it would be helpful to increase my academic credentials, so have recently completed a PhD in International Education at NYU. Not a very relaxing way to "retire", or to improve my golf game, but having a pretty good time with all this. Sorry to miss reunion so many reunions, but have put the 50th on the calendar!

I was deeply honored to receive France’s highest award, the Legion of Honor, this past spring in recognition of my career in French Education, 30 years teaching at the Lycée Français de New York, and now more than 10 years now with the French Heritage Language Program, serving Francophone immigrants in the United States. Other French-American work includes service over the past 6 years as a Trustee of the American University of Paris, where I have worked with fellow Swarthmore alumni Trustees, Gretchen Handwerger (‘56) and Gil Kemp (‘72.) We will soon be joined by Marcia Grant (‘62) who will serve as AUP’s interim Provost for the coming academic year.
