School Story
I really enjoyed Swarthmore and my friends there, the beautiful grounds, living in Parrish Hall for 3 years, and the psychology seminars. My senior year included rushed study, women's groups, a women's lib rally in New York, and my Phoenix articles including the Apr. 28, 1970 one on "Poll shows gynecologist would fill campus need." It summarized my poll of all women students, which found that the 105 Swarthmore women students who visited a gynecologist that year spent an average of $23 per woman that year on gynecology visits off-campus (not including pills and prescriptions), since Worth Health Center gave pap tests and pelvic exams but unfortunately would not prescribe birth control. I am proud that the class gift of 1970 went to pay for women's health care, in the hopes that a part-time gynecologist and birth control services could be available at Swarthmore in the future. I believe the class gift helped reduce emotional stress and contributed to overall happiness of both men and women students.
