Hey Anyone:
What happened to all our classmates: Mark Snavely, Mike Schechty, Donna Sipple, John DeVane, George Greenshields, Guy Kidwell, Twila Kilpatrick???? I do remember that Glen Albert died within a few years of graduation.

Anyone know?

Is there another website for our graduating class? I'm a bit surprised that not many people have availed themselves of this tool to reach out to classmates.

The following obituary was listed in the Tampa Tribune Today (1/16/09). I did not know John very well but I am sure there are those out there who would be interested.

John Perry Lockwood

LOCKWOOD, John Perry, 49, departed this life at his home in Clermont, Fla., January 9, 2009. John was born September 18, 1959, in Detroit, Mich. He moved to Lutz, Fla., with his family in 1974, graduated from Chamberlain High School in Tampa, attended the University of South Florida and University of Central Florida, and was employed by AT&T in Orlando, Fla. John was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. He is survived by his father, Charles P. Lockwood of Lutz, brothers, Charles D. and wife, Cheryl Lockwood of Denver, Colo., David C. and wife, Maya, Lockwood of Tampa, and Scott G. (wife Christina) Lockwood of Lutz, and his longtime friend, Karin Bookout of Clermont. He is also survived by his beloved aunt and godmother, Margaret Dowell; aunt, Eileen Buck, aunt Francis Cody, and aunt, Denise Biskner; his nephews, Charles and Chandler Lockwood of Denver; nieces, Victoria and Vanessa Lockwood of Lutz; and nieces, Bryn and Hannah Lockwood of Tampa. He is also survived by numerous cousins, including his especially close cousins, Charles Olivier, Mary Pizzuli, and James Olivier. John will be buried in his family plot at Myrtle Hill in Tampa, alongside his deceased mother Mary. John was a wonderful son, brother and uncle. He will be greatly missed. His family and friends will honor his memory at a graveside service.

Greg: Thanks for that sad update. I looked in my yearbook and don't see a John Perry...

Also, does anyone know what happened to Mark Snavely?

Okay, I see from the In Memory page that the deceased classmate was John Lockwood (not John Perry).

Here's some info Phil Heitlinger sent me:

Mark is a real sad story and somebody that I do miss. He was an SAE with us in Gainesville. He was up there for 6 or 7 years. After graduation he had a bout with Hodgkin's disease from which he thought he had recovered. 6 or 7 years ago the cancer returned. After trying everything he could, surgery, chemo, radiation. The doctors told him that they could extend his life a few more months and make him sick as hell or he could go home and enjoy some time with his wife and 4 kids. He passed away a couple of months later. The last time I spoke with him was during thanksgiving and he died shortly after New Years. It has to be seven years ago or so.

Thanks Denise. I really liked Snave a lot.

Did you all see on the Class of 78 In Memory that Simone Burkett killed herself right after Christmas? I didn't realize that she and Kurt Edwards got married. Very, very sad - I remember Simone as being a very nice girl.

Does anyone know if "Vincent" Harris on the In Memory page is Marty Harris? Phil Heitlinger recalls from hearing that Marty had died in a motocycle accident.

Really, I'm not death-obsessed.

When Donna Sipple's mom died the obituary stated that Donna had died September 21, 2001.

Linda (re: your I'm not death obsessed) – When I found this website and then found the In Memory of area I too was very moved by it all, makes one really ponder ones own life, and simply to have not had a tragedy of that proportion hit us.

I posted something about George in the In Memory section.

Denise – Glenn Albert died with running early one AM, I believe it was dark, like 5AM or something. If you remember he was very much into Cross Country / Long Distance Running. He wanted to follow in Bob Braman’s footsteps (class of 76). For a while Bob was coaching at USF I believe. My brother (Craig Hickson) and Bob were pretty good friends, I’ll see what my brother knows…

At the 20 year reunion (didn’t make it to the 10, 25, 30), I spoke with Jimmy Davis, he really didn’t want to talk about it, but implied something to the effect that Twila Kilpatrick was murdered by her estranged boyfriend. Man...

I had heard that Marty Harris died shortly after high school, but didn’t know how. I know Marty wasn’t his real name, but can’t remember if it was Vincent. I played golf with Marty a lot Jr. year, he lived on what used to be the 18th hole at Babe Zaharias.

I think Glenn Albert died in a car accident when the car he was riding in (with Bob Braman and someone else) flipped. He was the only one killed.

Hi Linda - I'll ask my brother... By that time, I was in the Marines... You might be right for sure, but I for some cRaZy reason slighlly rember a story about him running at 5AM in the morning... Either way, it's sad to see all these people whom have moved on to the "other side"...

Hope you are doing great, we had some great times together, including a bit in South Tampa...

Maurice King
KING, MAURICE ALAN

Maurice Alan King, 50, of Atlanta, GA, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2009.

He was the son of M. Bruce King of Asheville, NC, and the late Alice Banner Walker of Mooresville, NC. He was born in Morganton, NC, spent his formative years in Asheville, and went to high school in Tampa, FL.

He graduated in 1982 from the University of Florida at Gainesville with a B.A. in history. For the last 20 years, he worked in sales and marketing at Concepts, Ic., a sports-themed marketing company located in Decatur, GA.

He was a talented writer and storyteller; he wrote poetry, short stories, and two novels. He loved sports and was a great fan of the Florida Gators. He was an avid reader, movie buff, and trivia gamer. He also enjoyed cooking, gardening, photography, driving his convertible with the top down and the music playing, and wearing his signature footwear -- American made, high topped Chuck Taylor tennis shoes. He enjoyed life in his own unique way, but was always attentive to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his sister, Sylvia King Kochler, and brother in law, Keith W. Kochler of Franklin, NC; grandmother, Maude Silver King of Waynesville, NC; aunt, Nina Banner Dameron of Greensboro, NC; uncle and aunt, David and Ida King of Gray Court, SC; and uncle, Robert Allison of Taylors, SC. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his aunt, Katherine King Allison.

Denise Maute had heard via Susan Hapner that the cause of death for Alan King was sleep apnea. If you know anyone with sleep apnea, PLEASE get them to get help, research is starting to indicate it is considerably more prolific than previously thought. There’s even some research that would indicate that most men that have a heart attack during sleep that sleep apnea is the root cause… Simply sleeping somewhat upright (e.g. a recliner chair, or similar elevated angle can help)

Additionally, even those not dying, it wreaks havoc on your cardio and pulmonary systems, which, of course, wreaks havoc on everything… I believe we’ll begin to see much research here in the coming few years…
Simply stated, sleep apnea should be taken very serious…

May Alan’s soul be happy and at peace on the other side…

I just stumbled on to this site and while looking through everything I too was saddened by the number of classmates that are no longer with us. Especially Alan King. I lived next door to him while in high school, and we really had some great times. I will always have the memories...

I heard that Glenn Albert was riding on the hood of a car and fell off and was then run over. I never heard anything about him jogging. This came from Jim Purvis who lived nearby at the time.

@ Dawn Rogers, I knew it involved him being hit by a car... Not sure if people rememeber Mike Hurd, but the same them happened to him during 11th grade I believe...

Got to page 180 of the 76 year book, lower left corner "In Memoriam"

Glenn was killed in a car accident. I believe the car was driven by Bob Braman.

I think the following exchange between me & Bob Braman should clear up the Glenn Albert mystery:

Subject: Glenn

Hi Linda,

It was the summer of 1978 and both of my old teammates, Glenn Albert and Tom Hoffman, were home in Tampa (Tom had been away with military training and Glenn had been in summer school at UF). We went out for Pizza on a light-rain night and Glenn had a new (for him) Datsun sedan (a tin can really). Glenn, honestly, was messing around taking the turns a bit fast around Forest Hills golf course when the tires slid off the pavement and dug into a sandy area. We flipped over 2-3 times and landed upright. Tom, in the backseat, was fine but scared. I was in the passenger seat and banged up my shoulder, but didn't feel any pain really. Glenn was sitting up with a medium-sized cut on his head, but otherwise looked fine, but unconscious. Unfortunately Glenn broke his neck and died a day or so later.

Glenn was to be my roomate at UF the next month, so it obviously hit me pretty hard.

He was a complete maniac in so many ways, but also a wonderful, caring friend to so many of us.

I hope all in your class are able to stay in touch. I lost my best friend Glenn Burton last summer and I regret that we didn't stay closer the last 5-6 years (after our kids grew up).

All the Best,

Bob
