Anthony A. 'Tony' Shufon Sr.
PITTSTOWN - Anthony A. ‘Tony’ Shufon Sr., 73, of Windy Ridge Way, a resident of Pittstown for over 40 years, died peacefully Monday, January 18, 2010, surrounded by his beloved wife Gloria and his devoted family at the Albany Medical Center Hospital following a short illness. Born in Troy, December 16, 1936, Tony was the son of the late John J. and Mary (Bartholomew) Shufon and the best friend and husband for over 47 years of Gloria A. (O’Reilly) Shufon of Pittstown who survives. Tony and Gloria were married on January 5, 1963. Mr. Shufon was educated in Troy public schools and a graduate of Troy High School. As a young man he enlisted in and served for several years in the U.S. Coast Guard and then with the Coast Guard Reserve. He moved up the ranks quickly and at the time of his honorable discharge in July 1963 had earned the rank of radioman third class. For over 33 years Tony was employed as a tool and die maker by the former Ford Motor Co. in Green Island. He retired in 1988. Tony was a meticulous carpenter and built the homes that he and Gloria raised their family in. After retiring, Tony filled his time by lovingly reconstructing an older home and property that Gloria had found and just had to have, and by being a stay at home dad to his youngest daughter. He was a communicant of the former St. George Roman Catholic Church in Pittstown and Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Hoosick Falls. In his quiet time he enjoyed the hobbies of woodworking, creating beautiful hardwood furniture for his wife and family and was a avid lifelong New York Giants football fan. In addition to his wife Gloria, Tony is survived by his loving children Cindy Young and husband Bill of Grafton, A.J. Shufon Jr. and his wife Susan of Pittstown, Leah Cummins of Park City, Utah, Meredith Cavanaugh and husband Michael of New Paltz and Sarah Shufon and Timothy Westcott of Troy; a brother, Bernard Shufon; and a sister, Mary Calabrese, both of Troy; five grandchildren, Katy and Tony Shufon III and Jenna, Sarah and Kyle Cummins; several nieces and nephews and many dear and good friends. In addition to his parents, a sister, Diana Shufon, and two brothers, John Shufon and Edward Shufon, predeceased Tony. Relatives and friends are invited to call from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, January 20, 2010, at the Howard B. Tate & Son Funeral Home Inc., 2237 NY Route 7 in Raymertown. Funeral services will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Friday, January 22, 2010, at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church in Sycaway, where A Mass of Christian Resurrection will be concelebrated by Rev.
