PLANTATION, FL - Gordon A. Salway, 69, of 1003 NW 81st Terrace, and formerly of Stillwater, died Saturday, August 11, 2007, at University Hospital and Medical Center in Tamarac, FL, after courageously battling MDS for two years. Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Arthur Salway and Veronica Harris Whitney. He was a 1956 graduate of Troy High School. Gordon had served in the U.S. Coast Guard in Brooklyn and retired in 1991 after 28 years of military service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Posts in both Stillwater and Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was a published poet, an avid fisherman and animal lover, accomplished artist and loved to do crafts with his grandchildren. He was the husband of Nancy Gibson Salway and father of David B. Salway (Yasmin) of Miami, FL, and Deborah A. Meka (James) of Averill Park. He was the brother of Arlene Mosher (Robert) of Latham and brother-in-law of James Gibson (Pam) of Clearwater, FL. Also, surviving are his grandchildren Kristin, Heather, Matthew, Kaitlin and Nicholas Salway, Aundrea and Brittany Meka, David, Khalil and Arianna Yhann; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St. (Route 32), Waterford, and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Troy. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home office.
