Roy Metcalfe

METCALFE, Roy Burr 57, died unexpectedly August 5, 2008. He was born May 7, 1951 in Durand, WI to Burr and Marie Metcalfe. The Metcalfe family moved to Tucson, AZ in 1960. Roy was an auto mechanic by trade, owning Roy Metcalfe Automotive on Speedway from 1987 until retirement in 2006. Roy was involved in auto racing throughout his life. He owned and raced his own car and sponsored many drivers who raced in Tucson, Eloy, Safford, Phoenix, California and New Mexico. Roy's #56 Camaro was raced at Tucson Raceway Park before the track was converted to asphalt. Roy continued with dirt track racing sponsorship, building engines and making trips to the winner's circle with numerous drivers. In addition, he played an integral part in the legendary Speed Sport family of drag racing. Roy was very involved with Southern Arizona Division District 1 American Soap Box Derby. He was instrumental in qualifying kids for world championships in Akron, OH from 2002-2007. In 2006 a third place was won in the Master's Division. Roy's passion for car racing also included his love of driving his sand rail in the Imperial Valley, CA dunes, as well as being involved with land speed at Bonneville and Dry Lakes. Roy never knew a stranger. His friends will tell you that he was good hearted, generous, and mentored many young people over the years. He will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched and whom he considered his extended family.
