He was associated with numerous American opera companies in various capacities among which were opera coach, stage director, and general director. He was instrumental in developing and launching the careers of numerous young singers, including many of subsequent world-renown fame. At the time of his death he was serving as director of Chicago's Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. His knowledge of opera was encyclopedic, and his dedication to the art was unsurpassed.
