What Events Happened in 2015
- Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was found guilty in April and sentenced to life in prison without parole after killing Odin Lloyd, who was dating Hernandez' fiancee’s sister.
- The Supreme Court made a landmark decision in June, voting to allow same-sex couples to marry nationwide. The 5-4 decision was praised by many, including President Obama, who called it a “victory for America.” However, not everyone was pleased with the decision.
- Terror struck in Paris one week into the New Year when a group of men with extensive ties to terrorist organiztions targeted the offices of a famed satirical newspaper. Two men shot their way into the offices of Charlie Hebdo while a third waited near the getaway car. The attacks continued in France for two more days, taking the lives of six others, including two police officers and four people held hostage at a kosher grocery store in Paris. The three perpetrators also died.
- The shooting at Charleston’s historic Emanuel AME Church in June caused national mourning and outrage, after a 21-year-old, reportedly with white supremacist beliefs, attended a Bible study session at the famed predominantly African-American church before allegedly opening fire on the group.
- The gunman in another tragic shooting claimed it was the racism of the Charleston church shooting that prompted him to create a scene of carnage in the late summer. Vester Lee Flanagan, a disgruntled former news anchor, shot two of his former colleagues while they were on the air on location for a Roanoke, Virginia, TV station. The Aug. 26 shooting left reporter Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward dead. The gunman shot himself to death during a car chase with police later that day.
- From a college campus in Roseburg, Oregon, where 10 people were killed, or a military recruiting office in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where five people died, to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs, Colorado, that left three dead, shootings were an all-too-familiar occurrence in this calendar year.

Technology 2015
- Smartphone Screens That Sense Pressure: The sensors it embedded in the new iPhone’s screen allows the device to recognize force along with the usual multitouch gestures. Apple calls it 3D Touch, which is a silly name for an important idea.
- Simple Blood Tests for Cancer: Early detection is the biggest asset for doctors when it comes to treating cancer. Thanks to a new test developed by Dennis Lo, a doctor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the possibility of early detection became simpler in 2015. His test draws blood from a patient and then searches for viral DNA that dying cancer cells release into a person’s plasma.
- Brain Organoids: An important advancement in the medical field, 2015 introduced the world to a new way of growing human brain cells that could help uncover the mysteries of dementia, mental illness and other neurological disorders. While not exactly human brains in a dish, the cerebral organoids that can now be grown in labs possess features of a human brain in the first trimester of development. They could unlock new understanding to how neurons grow and function, which could lead to groundbreaking answers about brain activity.
- Holographic Computer: The future of computing has been touted as virtual or augmented reality for several years now. Microsoft took that concept a step further when it announced HoloLens, the first untethered, holographic computer. The concept completely changes how users interact with their computers, placing holograms that can be controlled by gestures in front of their eyes with navigation done with through the flick of the eye or voice command.
