In Memory

Nancy Parks (Wanless)

Nancy Parks died tragically in October 1990 at the hand of her estanaged husband. At the time of her death, she was a young mother to her son, Adam, as well as a student attending and working at Oklahoma State University.

Bill Walness was convicted of Nancy's murder and her parents have been raising Adam.

believe while in stillwater, she was murdered by her husband...followed the trial for a bit and think he got life...he was older than her and a scary person from what i remember...april, derek and i used to play racquetball at the colvin center at OSU and she worked there...always such a sweet, quiet person and her husband kept her on a tight leash...you wonder if you could have said something to get her to leave if she'd be alive today...very very sad

Ok, I have tried several times to sit down and post a response regarding my BFF, but I couldn't seem to find the right words. So I am going to try again (hope I don't babble :)

Nancy was my BFF. We were pretty much inseparable in high school and we remained very close after graduation. What I remember the most about her is her kindness and compassion she had for others. She was a loyal friend and always there for you. Some of my fondest memories: hanging out at her house and listening to her sister's records, cruising around in her sister's car, shopping at Woodland Hills, skipping a few classes....well it was all fun.

Our senior year she started dating an older, a lot older, guy named Bill Wanless. They got married after graduation and moved to Stillwater so she could attend OSU. Shortly thereafter, she had a boy named Adam. Everything was going along pretty normal except that Bill had always been the jealous type, the "very" jealous type so much so that he was even jealous of Nancy's and mine's friendship.

Nancy was working at a coffee shop near campus so she saw a lot of students and friends from OSU, therefore she also made a lot of new friends working there. This made Bill extremely jealous which lead to a lot fighting. He became physical (at one point, he through her up against the refrigerator) Nancy was scared and afraid for herself and son. She decided to leave and file for divorce. As Nancy was packing to move out of their apartment he came home and they had a huge fight which led to him beating her, tieing her up with a phone cord, and crushing her larynx. Her crushed larynx killed her by suffocation. Needless to say he went to jail for murder and her parents got custody of Adam.

What really upsets me is that weekend right before it all happened she and I had planned a trip to visit her sister in CA to help her get some distance away from him because she was very afraid he might do something. We had planned to leave the following weekend and then this all happened. I always wonder if we had left sooner if she would still be alive. She was such a wonderful friend and a fabulous mom. I miss her terribly and not a day goes by without me thinking of her. She will always have a special place in my heart.

jeri and robyn---i am so sorry for the loss of nancy in your lives...when i moved here from chicago, she took me in as a friend and help me meet others...it is such a shame that adam will not grow up with his mother's kindness and love for others in his life..thanks for the memo, jeri :)
