David Suther

David passed on March 6. A Celebration of Life will be held at First Methodist Church on March 10 at 1:00 p.m. Visitaion will follow at David and Judy's home. I will post the obituary as soon as I can.

Tuscaloosa - David Wilson Suther, age 69 of Tuscaloosa, passed away Saturday, March 6, 2021 at Hospice of West Alabama with his family at his bedside. Services will be Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Ken Dunivant and Dr. Clinton Hubbard officiating. Visitation will follow the service at the Suther home, 1311 Downing Ridge, Tuscaloosa, AL 35406. Norwood-Wyatt Chapel is directing.
David was born and raised in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1969 and attended the University of Alabama.
He had many friends from all the years of playing baseball and golf. His golf buddies even had a year end dinner for the selection of the "David Suther Best Dressed Award". Those memories were so special to David after his terrible car wreck in 1984 leaving him disabled. The disability kept him from some things but made him closer to his family with their complete support. David used his disability to help others by volunteering his time at DCH Rehab Pavilion. He was awarded the Inspiration Award by the hospital in 2009 for his over 25 years of service in helping others with their disability.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Wilson Suther and Jane Gill Suther.
David is survived by his loving wife Judy with whom he had just celebrated their forty-eighth wedding anniversary on February 17. He was also blessed with two wonderful children, Steve Suther (Anna) and Georgia Abston (Andy); sister, Carol Suther Burrage; and three granddaughters, Madelyn Lee Abston, Mary Alston Suther and Tucker Ann Suther. The granddaughters always went to David for their hugs and candy from his dish next to his chair.
David was an avid member of a local gym which members would say his work outs would put most people to shame but David would say the best part of the gym was leaving.
David always had a big smile and looked for the best in life. David and Judy had such a good life despite the hardship of his accident. They loved and respected each other. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Brad Lee, Travis Lee, Bill Robertson, Brandon Farmer, Cedric Stewart, and Jack Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers are golf buddies from Meadowbrook Country Club and Tuscaloosa Country Club, past and present employees of Russell S. Lee Floor & Tile, and classmates of Tuscaloosa High School class of 1969.

My condolences go out to the Suther family, especially to David's wife Judy. I'm so glad we were all together at our 50th class reunion of the class of 1969. We were so fortunate to have this celebration before covid hit.

Congratulations on 40 yrs of marriage! That is such a blessing.  May you find comfort in many fond memories of David.

So very sorry to lose David. One of my earliest friends from University Place school. We played together on the 1963 Tuscaloosa Little League champion Cardinals co-coached by Robert Sullivan and David's dad. What a southpaw pitcher and shortstop David was!  Though I moved away at 18 for the Air Force, we always kept up through the years when I came to town or through Christmas cards. Many great memories, Judy!  David will be dearly missed as he touched everyone who ever met him.  God bless you and your family.

David Suther and Tim Sullivan befriended me when I was the new kid in class at University Place School in Ms. Benefield's 6th grade class. David was a good friend throughout my junior and THS years and for the rest of his life. He is one of my favorite people. I am a better person for having known him. He was an outstanding athlete whose ability I coveted and admired. After his wreck with all his difficulties what impressed me the most was that every time we met he was grinning from ear to ear. Judy and his children are in my prayers and based on his profession of faith in Jesus I look forward to the day I see him in his resurrected body that will be immortal and pain free. Thank you Lord for my good friend!

I think I speak for everyone in our 1969 class, we all hate to see that IN Memoriam come across. David Suther was a wonderful friend and I, like Dolan, remember Tim, David, and Billy back as far as University Place. Such great memories of years attending school together. My heartfelt prayers to Judy and his children and family. He will certainly be missed. Lynn Hall

Some marriages are meant to be.  But only some are inspirations.   David and Judy's was both.  And we know it took remarkable spirit from both of them.  My sympathy to Judy in her loss, Elaine Hughey

Could not agree more with each of our classmates comments.  Growing up in the Forest Lake  neighborhoods David and I spent many hours playing together in the area.  He was one of my first "buddies", although I have been away from Tuscaloosa for many years his wonderful smile and friendship will not be forgotten.

David was special!  One of my very best friends growing up at University Place Elementary.  I spent countless hours at his house.  His family made me feel like it was my home.

Athletically, we were always competing.  But, David was just better than most of us.  Like Mark Ballard mentioned in his message, David and Mark and Walter beat my Dodgers in '63!

David was such a hero of mine that I said as a child that if I ever had a son, I was going to name him David!  And it happened.  When I would see Judy and David at lunch through the years, he would always have that wonderful smile and we would mention my son being named after him.  It seemed his smile would even get bigger then!

David was so fortunate to have Judy for his wife.  He was a lucky man!

We will all miss David very much. He was

He and Judy both learned the secret of being content. Judy, our love and admiration

What a fine boy who turned into a noble man.  He was always such a happy fellow - you were  just the person who he wanted to see at that very moment.

My deepest condolences to you, Judy. Please know that I am holding you in my heart.
