Warren Averette

MARCH 19, 1952 – FEBRUARY 9, 2024

William Warren Averette, age 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 9th. Warren was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, AL. He is preceded in death by his wife Toni Hall Averette, his daughter, Mari Frances Averette Davis, his parents, Vester William and Dovey Rebecca Averette, and his sister Evelyn Bain. He is survived by his son, Russell Warren “Rusty” Averette (Laura), and his grandchildren Miller Caroline Averette, Russell Warren “Rhett” Averette, Jr., Mary Rose Davis, his sister, Iris Averette Taylor, and nieces and nephew Michael Taylor, Susie Camille Bohannon, Carla Woods, and Karen Harris.

Warren was a kind man who could make friends whatever situation he encountered. He served in the Alabama National Guard. Following his time of service, he worked a variety of maintenance jobs including Gulf States Paper before starting his own plumbing and sewer business. Warren had a mechanical mind and could figure out how most any machine worked. Following his work in the plumbing business he served in maintenance with multiple properties located around the University of Alabama. He often happily encountered many University students, unstopping drains, repairing appliances, and anything else that needed to be taken care of.

Warren loved to tell stories (very detailed stories) and enjoyed being around people. When people visited the family farm, he loved to show them the donkey who could drink Dr. Pepper from a can. He loved people gatherings for any reason and was always quick to help. Warren was the special assistant for all party planning, setting up tables and chairs, and anything else that needed to be done. Later in life he would enjoy working in his daughter’s restaurant, making salads, and talking with anyone who came by for a bite to eat.

After many years of declining health, Warren did his best to maintain his independence at his home with his dog Leo, taking daily rides through the neighborhood checking on the neighbors. He was lovingly assisted by his niece Susie Camille Bohannon and then Mrs. Angela Knight to live independently as long as possible. Ultimately, he would come to reside at Heritage Healthcare and Rehab for the last few years. Utilizing his electric wheelchair, he would make his rounds daily as the “mayor” of Heritage. He knew every nurse, many of the residents, and where the coffee pot was located. He was beloved to many of the wonderful care providers at Heritage. There too he was also graciously cared for by Mrs. Angela Knight, his caretaker, counselor, and partner in crime for every Nurse’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and any other reason to throw a party and celebrate at Heritage.

Regarding his spiritual life, in his early years, Warren attended Tuscaloosa Church of God with his parents. Following his marriage to Toni, he was a member of Stone Memorial Baptist Church and East McFarland Baptist Church. As his health declined in the last few years, he was unable to attend church, but kept a Bible at his bedside and often had Scripture read to him. He was confident and assured of his faith in Christ.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 13th, at Memory Chapel Funeral Home, 2200 Skyland East Boulevard, Tuscaloosa. The visitation will be at noon with services at 1pm. Reverend Jason Sterling will be officiating.
