Paula Green (Phurrough)

Paula Green Phurrough, 71, of Columbia, MD, passed away on March 23rd at her home in Columbia, MD. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel on April 3, 2023 from 11:00AM to 1:00PM.

Paula was born to Paul & Betty Green on December 27, 1951, in San Diego, CA where her Dad was in the Navy. She grew up in Tuscaloosa, AL and graduated high school there and attended the University of Alabama where she earned a degree in Nutrition. She completed her Dietetic Internship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. She later earned a Masters in Nutrition and Clinical Dietetics at the Finch University of Health Sciences at the Chicago Medical School. She worked in numerous positions around the world as she accompanied Steve through his military career. This included the Senior Dietitian at the Department of Defense's National Burn Unit at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; the senior civilian Clinical Dietitian at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where she treated wounded warriors returning from overseas conflicts; and as a consultant in trauma nutrition to other Navy Dietitians around the world.

When not impressing the world with her professional acumen, Paula was an avid artist, gourmet home cook, and lover of dogs, giraffes, music, and home renovations. She was a devoted "Gramma" to her four grandchildren and cherished time with her family.

Paula is survived by her spouse of 48 years, Steve Phurrough of Columbia, MD; her son Jeffrey (Rachel) Phurrough and grandsons Brandon and Connor of Pasadena, CA; daughter Jennifer (Jonathan) Bagg and granddaughters Ellie and Robyn of Derwood, MD; sister Brenda Walker of Tuscaloosa, AL; and brother Steve Green of Pass Christian, MS. She is preceded in death by her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in support of colon cancer or leukemia research.
