Mrs Zuma instilled a deep love and appreciation in me for my mother tongue. It was sometimes too much to learn, understand and remember. She taught Zulu with such passion, pure pleasure and absolute dedication. I admired her for pursuing her studies in Zulu to varsity, before then I did not knwo anyone who had gone to varsity to study Zulu in order to teach it to high school kids. It raised my regard for my mother tongue. In a school where English wa steh medium of instruction, she kept us rooted in our mother tongue and made sure that we never lost sight of who we are. I am so grateful fo that and I am sure the matric Zulu marks were a shining testimony of her great teaching.

I often wondered why we needed to learn such difficult and seemingly "outdated" stuff. I did not imagine ever using all that stuff we learnt but after moving away from home - induku enhle igawulwa ezizweni - to a mostly non-Zulu speaking place, I was amazed at how much I missed speaking Zulu! Everytime I get a chance to speak Zulu, when I vivist my mom or KZN, I throw in "Ma'am Zuma's Zulu" with such flourish to my mother's amusement and delight :-) I am so blessed to still have someone in my life who speaks and understands Zulu.

What a blow has the Zulu language been dealt by your passing. The students who were not taught Zulu by you have missed out on an enriching experience! I remember you with fondness and warmth in my heart for your gentleness, your soft spokeness, your patience and understanding, your drive for us to learn and your motherly nature. It was always apparent to me that your desire was for us to learn Zulu to the best of our ablities and your pleasure was obvious when we learnt it and did well. You were a walking "inqolobane", we could never catch you out, no matter how much we tried, how hard we looked for the most obscure words, idioms, etc. You made me a believer!

Ngeke ngikukhohlwe Ma'am.

Mam Zuma,

You were a wonderful woman to me and my classmates, very misunderstood by many and I think you largely led a shy/introverted life when you were at Oakford Priory. May your soul rest in peace.

Gugu Helen Dladla Motepe has written a lot about you instilling a Zulu culture in us. Thank you for your contribution to my life and all the kindness shown to me when I was your student .
