School Story:
I have so many good memories that I couldn't even begin to record them. I do remember eternally cruising Main for some unknown purpose. Rhea and I used to make fudge and drink Pepsi at her house, it's amazing we didn't o.d. on sugar! I also recall Jan's car only had heat when she accelerated the gas pedal! Lynnda and I did our best to keep up with whatever was advertised in Seventeen magazine, but she had the beautiful, long, straight hair that I could never achieve!
I also remember being invited to swim in an old mining pit (but mama wouldn't let me do that - she said that's where some people got polio and that there were snakes in there)! So, I didn't go in with "the snakes," but Lynnda and I decided to just drive by the "snake pit", totally not realizing that guys skinny dip. We thought it would be funny to take their keys, just for a short while, but when we found all their clothes on a rock, it just seemed so funny to steal them! We fully intended to drive away for just a few minutes and then return their clothes to their parked car. I was horrified to find their car gone when we returned to drop off the clothes! Not knowing what to do, we returned to Main street, only to see three guys driving around with no shirts on and I'm not sure what else was missing. All I could imagine was Mrs. Kolb or Mrs. Donaldson asking their sons where their clothes were and being told that Mary Ann Johnson took them! I was so scared and sure I would be grounded till I was 35 if my mom got a call from either lady. They did get their clothes back - I wasn't about to return them - so Lynnda ran to the back of their car, with her head turned, eyes shut and threw the clothes in the car!
I didn't know how blessed I was to be raised in Vinita, in the 60's. I went to school with the same people all of my life, and all of the teachers knew our families and our histories. But I didn't understand then what a wonderful support and backdrop that was for life. I don't think most kids have that now, but I'm thankful we did.
