Willard Daykin Hunsberger, 91, was born Feb. 14, 1901, in Wadsworth to Frank (Dick) and Ethelwyn Daykin Hunsberger. He passed away Feb. 6 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Rittman after a long debilitating illness.

Willard was a graduate of Wadsworth High, where he was valedictorian of his class and a strong athlete. He obtained his B.A. at Oberlin College, class of 1924. Later, he received his M.A. in history at the University of Wisconsin. He taught history, government and civics at Wadsworth High School for 41 years, retiring in 1971. Willard enjoyed his many students and loved to teach. He was Director of Athletics for a number of years and took an active interest in sports. In 1980 he was elected to the Wadsworth Hall of Fame. Willard was secretary for many years for the local Izaak Walton League. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, of which his grandfather was the first pastor.

Willard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Orpha; daughters and sons-in- law, Dr. Deborah Hunsberger of Omaha, Neb., James and Gretchen Gallentine of Broken Bow, Neb., Dr. Peter and Grace Gehret of Greenwood Village, Colo. son, Frank Hunsberger of Custar, Ohio; brother, George (Ruth) Hunsberger of  Fayetteville, Ark.; eight grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at the First Mennonite Church, 405 Trease Rd., Wadsworth. Visitation before and after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Medina County Parks District 710 W. Smith Rd., Medina 44256, or to the Salvation Army, 527 College St. P.O. Box 300, Wadsworth 44281.
