Alice Chester Hartman (Music Teacher)

 

Alice C. Chester ("Medina's much loved Lady in Red"), age 94, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2012 in Medina.

Alice was born March 13, 1918 in Poe to the late Roland and Clara (Warner) Hartman. Alice was one of five alumni inducted into the Medina High School Hall of Fame in 2009. She had been chosen for life accomplishments. She attended Poe School, graduate of Medina High School and Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music. She taught music in the Wadsworth Schools, where she staged annual operettas. She was a teacher of music for 35 years and a piano player since she was 6. Alice also played in the Family Hartman Orchestra. She also played the organ for her church's, Harvest Presbyterian, First Christian Church for many years and Poe United Methodist Church.

When Alice retired in 1974, she began playing the piano for the Medina Noon Kiwanis Club and in 1987 became the first woman to be inducted into the organization. She went on to become very active in the club, and the chapter's first woman president in 1994, and was inducted into the Kiwanis Hall of Fame in 1995. Her involvement has extended to the Golden Clusters for Baldwin-Wallace Alumni, Clytean Club, Montville Grange, and the Medina County Historical Society and Medina County Retired Teachers Association. In 1998, she was honored by the Medina County YWCA as a Woman of Distinction and by the Medina Noon Kiwanis Club with The Hixon Award.

She was the beloved aunt of Judie (Richard) Roach of Norton, Bonnie Hartman Barker (wife of the late Bob Barker) of Wadsworth, George and Sharon Chester of Tennessee and John (Doreen) Chester of Florida. She is also survived by numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey F. Chester and brother, William (Marjory) Hartman.

Service will be held Monday, June 25, at 11 a.m. at Harvest Presbyterian Church, 1095 E. Reagan Parkway, Medina, Rev. Dr. David Wallover will officiate. Final resting place will be Spring Grove Cemetery. Family will receive friends at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina, Sunday, from 2 to 8 p.m.
