Lyman Hall powder puff narrowly defeats Sheehan for third straight win at Wednesday’s Samaha Bowl

WALLINGFORD — In its 47 years, the Samaha Bowl has had its share of wild moments, though Wednesday’s first half and finish may rank near the top.
Three touchdowns over five plays sparked a wild back-and-forth first half, and Lyman Hall sealed the 21-18 victory by converting on third and 23 late in the fourth quarter in a game played at Lyman Hall’s John J. Riccitelli Field. The win marked the third-straight Samaha Bowl victory for the Trojans.

Another Samaha Bowl in the books! Congratulations to both Sheehan and Lyman Hall for putting on a SHOW at Riccitelli Feild. Here are the highlights from the Wallingford game on Wednesday afternoon:
“It really came down to the wire,” Lyman Hall head coach Ed Neilander said after the Trojans hoisted the trophy. “It was an exciting game for both teams. I’m just glad we were able to come away with the win.”
The Trojans began the flurry of scoring with a 70-yard run by quarterback Kailey Lipka late in the first quarter. Lipka helped the Trojans tack on the two-point conversion by scrambling into the end zone on a botched play.
Needing a response, the Titans looked to the speed of running back Jordyn Nickerson, who sprinted for a 52-yard touchdown run just three plays after Lyman Hall’s score. The Trojans maintained the 8-6 lead following a failed Sheehan two-point try.
The wild seesaw affair continued on the ensuing kickoff, when Lyman Hall’s Sydney Nilsen returned the kick 82 yards for the touchdown to make it 14-6. Minutes later, another promising Lyman Hall drive was halted when Sheehan safety Caroline Sabo stripped the ball loose and returned the fumble 65 yards to cut the Lyman Hall lead to 14-12.
“We talked about that before the game, that if we were on defense and in need of a score, go for that ball,” Sheehan head coach Cheryl Colwick said. “I’ve never seen that before.”
The Trojans put together a productive drive, capped off by a 25-yard touchdown run by Nilsen to give Lyman Hall a two possession lead. Sheehan responded with a methodical 10-minute drive, capped with a touchdown pass to Olivia Robles on fourth and goal to trim the Lyman Hall lead to 21-18 at the start of the fourth quarter.
Looking to put the tight contest out of reach, the Trojans turned to Nilsen again. She converted a third and 23 into a first down with just over two minutes to go, denying Sheehan the chance at a potential game-winning drive.
“Honestly, I was looking to make a pass,” Nilsen said of the crucial, game-sealing run. “But I had to do what I had to do to get that first down. I saw an opening and took it. I’m just glad I got there.”
After the game, the event’s founder Judy Samaha presented Lyman Hall with the trophy, making the trip up from Florida to witness the evolution of the game she created back in 1972.
