Katy graduated from Chico State in 1984 with a BA in International Relations and received her master's . degree from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 2000.  She developed the Cuesta College Learning Skills Lab, where she taught reading and computer literacy. There is an annual scholarship dedicated in her honor.

Her husband, Mark, and son, Chris, survive her.
