Gave his life in Vietnam.

If anyone is going to visit Washington, DC, visit the Vietnam Memorial Wall.  You can find Bills name at panel W32, line 18.  Bill was killed on 2-12-69.  He was well decorated.  He was awarded the bronze star, purple heart, CIB, plus other medals.

Well said Ron. His loss really hit me as he was the first person that I knew personally that was killed in Nam. Yes, he was indeed a true hero. Memory of him never fades. Bill never made it to any of the class reunions. I guess we'll just have to catch up on things when we meet again in heaven.

Well deserved comments guys.  I wonder how many of us served in the Viet Nam era; or directly in Nam; and also who else we lost?  I served a number of years in the American Legion Honor Guard, and witnessed the reduction in services for WW2 Vets, and the increase now, in the increase of military honors for Nam Vets...hits home for sure.

April 25 is ANZAC Day in Australia. Dawn services. It is similar to Memorial Day in USA.  The soldiers who defended freedom, those still living and who gave their lives, are remembered.  I shall remember Bill and I shall remember my father when I hoist an American beer in their memory and in their honour.  Lest we forget!

Many of us served, If we did not see actual combat I look at those of us, as a Hero. Then there are those that saw combat. In many cases that ment bullets coming their way. Those Vets, I consider, as War Heroes. Then there is that special catagory that Bill Bakken is in. He is in that special class that is just, hard to talk about.Thank you Bill.
