Gene Mayer was killed in a plane crash on November 8th, 1978. He and the pilot were helping two other people move from one state to another. They were on there way back to Idaho when they ran into a snow storm over the mountains. The pilot was inexperianced and probably should not have attempted the return flight. But knowing Gene, they probably were couragous enough to attemt anything. Quite ironically he and the pilot were members of a search and rescue team who were called upon to save other people who went into the mountains and were lost.

I met Gene when we were Freshman in High School. I didn't know him before that, even though we lived about two miles apart. We rode the bus together and were in Electronics Class as well. During our Freshman year he developed Polio and missed a lot of school. A very good friend of mine who was in Electronics Class with us (Don Bastian-transferred to HHS in 1962)) and I decided to finish his project for him. After it was completed, we took it to his house. From that point on Gene and I were best of friends.
