STALEY WAS A VERY GOOD FRIEND OVER THE YEARS. THRU HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE. I KNOW THAT HE CARED DEEPLY FOR HIS SON VERY MUCH AND I COULD SEE THAT WHEN HE AND JON JON WOULD COME AND VISIT CAROL AND ME WHEN WE LIVED IN CONROE. I DO MISS HIM.
I don't remember when I first met Staley. Somewhere I have a picture of him at age 5 or so in a suit and a huge hat from the forties. We were always friends. His mom Mary worked at out church and was a mentor to all of us Methodist kids and sometimes a co conspirator. Staley loved football. Especially the cowboys. He was a beloved coach at Sour Lake and other schools near Houston. We started writing around the time he got cancer. He fought a brave fight. I drove to see him a few days before he died. He faced the ravages of tge disease with valor and humor. He stayed with his brother Bill until his death. Staley was a wonderful friend. I loved him. He was a good father. I am sure he taught his students much more than how to play football
Staley lived next door to my grandmother on Alma Street so we grew up together, making mudpies in her backyard and playing together as little kids. We were always dear friends. I called him "Stalicks", the nickname Mrs. Engleman, our 8th grade English teacher gave him, and he always called me by my middle name, Jane. He always came by to see Jim and I and our children when he came to town to visit him mom. I miss him. What a wonderful guy, what a dear friend.

Staley was in grade school as well as high school with me. He was a funny guy. So sorry he has left this world.
