Lakme Coakley (Teacher)

Marie Lakme Coakley, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002.

Mrs. Coakley received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Webster University in 1933 and a Masters of Arts in teaching from Wichita State University in 1965. She taught at St. Thomas Aquinas Grade School and West High School in Wichita. She was the secondary reading consultant for the Wichita Public Schools and taught teachers how to evaluate student reading ability at Wichita State University. She co-authored a reading evaluation tool for reading assessment. She and educator, Marg Meek were the first reading specialists in the Wichita Public Schools. 

Mrs. Coakley was the first organization and development chairman for the Wichita Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and served as its president. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the Wichita chapters of Camp Fire Girls and Boys Inc. and the National Council of Christians and Jews. She was president of the St. Joseph Medical Center Auxiliary and served as a member of the Board of Directors for St. Joseph Medical Center for six years. She retired as the associate area vice president for Area VI of the American Association of Retired Persons in 1994 after 10 years of service to the A.A.R.P. Mrs. Coakley was a recipient of the Bene Merenti Medal from Pope Pius XII in 1957 and is listed in Who's Who of American Women in 1957 and Personalities of the West and Midwest 1968. She was an Auxiliary member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita. (Wichita Eagle, January 17, 2002)
