Shirley Gabrielson, age 76, died September 18, 2011. Shirley Gabrielson, age 76, died September 18, 2011, of cancer in Wichita. The daughter of Francis and Mildred Walker, she grew up in St. John. She graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and went on to teach business at El Dorado High School, where she met Kenneth Gabrielson of Lindsborg. They married on August 20, 1961 and soon moved to Marysville. The couple eventually settled in Wichita where she completed her master's degree at Wichita State University. Known as Mrs. G to her students, she taught journalism at Wichita West and South high schools and was a leader in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association. In 1991, she received the first ever Jackie Engel Award for outstanding high school journalism advising and in 1995 was inducted as a charter member into the Kansas Scholastic Journalism Hall of Fame.
