Anderson Becomes Steady Substitute, Teaches Large Variety of Subjects (West Word, December 4, 1964)

Mrs. Lucille Anderson, a substitute teacher since 1942, has now taught every department in the Wichita school system. She finally got to teach boys’ physical education.

She graduated in 1924 from Friends University. That commencement day was a hectic one. She got married at 9:00 a.m. and had commencement exercises at 10:00 a.m.

Mrs. Anderson graduated from Friends with an English and history major. Before 1942 Mrs. Anderson was a regular school teacher but later turned to substitute teaching. She likes substitute teaching as it gives her a chance to teach in many departments. Her favorite department is shop. She substitutes a lot at Allison and Hadley in the shop department.

Often referred to as a crank, Mrs. Anderson admits that she is one. But she believes that’s why so many teachers ask for her to come back and substitute for them. Many times she is booked far in advance for substituting in widely varying departments. The students usually come to like Mrs. Anderson because she tells them interesting and unusual stories about the Civil War.
