Barbara Gayle Hooten Beck, 63, formerly of Fredericksburg, died Friday Sept. 12, 2008, at her home in Mendocino, Calif.

Barbie was born June 22, 1945, in Front Royal. She graduated as salutatorian from James Monroe High School in 1963, and from Salem College in Winston- Salem, N.C., in 1967. After a brief foray into computer programming and a more extensive one in marketing for Proctor & Gamble, Barbie returned to Fredericksburg with her family. She established Unique Impressions, an arts & crafts business that flourished for many years.

Barbie moved to the Mendocino Coast in 2005 to be closer to her two grandsons, whom she loved dearly and who share her red hair. She thrived on the stimulation of young imaginations and was a selflessly devoted mother, grandmother and friend. Never hesitant to express her opinion, Barbie was a free-thinker without peer and comfortable in her non-conformity. She will forever be remembered for her tenacity, generosity, wit, camaraderie and love.

Barbie is survived by her children, Anne Barraclough Beck and John David McCue Beck; two grandchildren, Job and Abraham Vollman, all of Mendocino, Calif.; her mother, Barbara Barraclough Hooten of Fredericksburg; and three brothers, Joseph H. Hooten of Belleville, Ill., and Brian E. Hooten and W. David Hooten, both of Fredericksburg.

Chapel by the Sea in Fort Bragg, Calif., is handling arrangements, which will be private.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Mendocino Coast District Hospital, Hospice Service, 700 River Drive, Fort Bragg, Calif. 95437, Attn: Arlene Case.
