Myrtice Evelyn Carey, 87, of Lexington, died Sunday, July 12, 2015. Born in Statesboro to the late Russie Lee and Mattie Lou Smyth Prosser, Myrtice was also preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Carey, and brother Marvin Prosser. She is survived by her children, Myra Carbonell, Melanie McMichael, and Jody Deaton (Paul), grandchildren, Alex McMichael (Lilia), Pate McMichael (Marlene), Adam Carbonell (Jenna), Jared Deaton, John Prosser Deaton, great grandchildren, Jack and Mila McMichael, and sisters Marjorie Brandimarte, Myra Alice Langley, Mooney Prosser, and Melba Whitaker. The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 14th from 6-8 P.M. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 15th, at 1:00 P.M. at Lord and Stephens East Chapel. Burial will take place at Clark Cemetery following the service. Marguerite Opt Crenshaw, 91, of Athens, GA passed away Thursday, June 5, 2014.

A native of Anderson County, SC, Mrs. Crenshaw was the daughter of the late Richard Allen Opt and Chessie Brooks Opt and was preceded in death by her husband, Clyas Lee Crenshaw, son, Allen Hamilton Crenshaw, and granddaughter, Sherry Suzanne Williams. She taught at Pendleton High School from 1943-1949 and at Oglethorpe High School from 1967 until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. Crenshaw gave abundantly of her time to her family and the community. She was an active member of Athens First United Methodist Church and Circle 7. She volunteered her time to Athens Regional Medical Center as a "Pink Lady", meals on wheels, and the soup kitchen. Mrs. Crenshaw belonged to a bridge group, craft group, and loved to play dominos with her dear friends every other Wednesday. She had a positive outlook on life and had an uplifting spirit.

Survivors include daughter Susan Crenshaw Hill and husband, George Hill Jr; son, George Howard Crenshaw; three grandchildren, Tracy Crenshaw, Hayley Crenshaw Jordan, and George Kelly Hill III.

Funeral services will be held 3PM Sunday, June 8th at Athens First United Methodist Church with Reverends Chuck Hodges and Martha Aenchbacher officiating. Entombment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8PM Saturday, June 7th at Bernstein Funeral Home.

Clayton Bryant, Ray Duree, Taft Osborne, George Hill Jr, George Hill III, and George Howard Crenshaw will serve as pallbearers.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 N. Lumpkin St., Athens, GA 30601.

Obituary for Charles Broughton Earnest Jr.

Charles Broughton Earnest, Jr. age-81 of Calhoun, Ga. Passed away on Friday, July 25, 2014.

Mr. Earnest was born on February 4, 1933, son of the late C.B. Earnest, Sr. and the late Julia Griggs Earnest. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betsy Carson.

Charles Earnest is survived by his wife, of 58 years, Catherine King Earnest, his children, Michael G. Earnest (Cindy), daughters Karen Mizell (Malcolm), Jennine McDaris (Greg), and Mary Catherine (Kitty) Rabun (Ben). Grandchildren include Myles Earnest, Micah Earnest, Mary Beth Gable (James); Dean McDaris, Christopher McDaris, Jana McDaris, Katie Rabun, and Benjamin Rabun, and one Great Grandchild, Burch Gable. He also has several nieces and a nephew.
Mr. Earnest graduated from Cedartown HS and the Uni. Of Georgia. He played football at UGA under Coach Wally Butts, was a member of the Blue Key Society, G Club, Gridiron Society and Wally's Boys. He served as a Lt. In the US Army after graduating from UGA.

Charles Earnest was a two time resident of Calhoun, Ga. Serving as a teacher and head football coach at Calhoun High School from 1963 – 1966. Then again in 1989 when he took a job at Red Bud High School. Prior to his retirement he was employed as an educator, coach, special events bus driver with the Gordon Co. Board of Education. He was a member of Calhoun First Baptist Church and the Faith Seekers SS Class. During his high school, college and adult years he served with the Ga. Baptist Brotherhood Department at Camp Pinnacle in Clayton, Ga. and Camp Glynn in Brunswick, Ga..

The family would like to send a special thanks to Charles's care givers at Care at Home, Gordon Home Care and the Homestead Hospice.

His body will be cremated and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 2, at 4:00 at Thomas Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held Saturday, August 2, from 2-4 at Thomas Funeral Home.

Maxeys - Wayne Chester Josey, 92, of Maxeys, died Thursday, September 24, 2009, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Lee County, S.C., he was a son of the late William Chester and Julia Scarborough Josey. He was a graduate of Coker College and a graduate of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve as a Lt. Colonel. He also served in the S.C. National Guard. Mr. Josey was a political science teacher in Oglethorpe and Clarke County School Systems and first taught Bible at Kingstree High School in South Carolina. The Rev. Josey was a retired Southern Baptist Minister. During his ministry, he served churches in Indiana, South Carolina and Georgia.
Surviving is a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce J. and David Mickle of Camden, S.C.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dwayne W. Josey of Saluda, S.C., Ricky W. and Angie Josey of Canon and Michael A. and Lori McKeel of Athens; one sister, Julia "Jupie" Wendlinger of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery in Bishopville, S.C.

John Wilson Nix
(February 4, 1940 - February 15, 2012)

 

John Wilson Nix, 72, died Wednesday February 15, 2012 at his residence in Taylorsville, GA.

He was born in Rockmart, GA on February 4, 1940 to Woodrow and Mildred Edwards Nix. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Jerry Scott Nix and Aaron Nix.

He attended Cedartown High School, Young Harris College and later graduated from Shorter College with a degree in education. He had a long career as a high school teacher and athletic coach for several schools in Georgia (including Berrien High School). He served as principal of Fitzgerald High School, then as assistant superintendent of Ben Hill County Schools, before retiring as transportation director of Ben Hill County School System.

He is survived by his wife: Sue Taylor Nix of Taylorsville, sons: John (Diane) Nix, Jr, and Clay Nix of Taylorsville; brother: Byron Nix of Wedoweee, AL; and grandsons: Daniel Nix, Nathan Nix, and Zachery Nix all of Murfreesboro, TN.

Funeral services will be held Saturday February 18, 2012 at 3 PM in the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ted Towns officiating. Interment will be in church cemetery.
