I remember Mel and those damn Joe "Willie" Namath white shoes he wore.  In our game against Fremont, we exchanged series of plays and we finally stopped Fremont deep at their own end of the field.  I was a linebacker (along with my cohort in crime, Lonnie Ray) and my primary responsibility during a punt was to make sure that the kicker kicked the ball and didn't run with it.  We were playing at Seacreast and heading towards the North end of the field.  We had a "wall" set up for the return to the West side of the field.  The ball was snapped, the kicker did get the ball kicked and Mel Knopp was the return man.  He momentarily bobbled the ball and started to go right to avoid an on rushing Fremont Tiger, but he then juked left and ran like he always did, fast.  He made the wall and I could see my team mates picking up the opposition and making great blocks.  Mel had one man to beat before he got to me and I saw him jump over the defender who was trying to tackle him (there is a picture of this somewhere) and was heading to me.  I had only to block one man and Mel was home free.  I turned to pick up the kicker who was back peddling to stall us.  Mel yelled out, "Get him, Kotch"...I tried to position myself for a devastating block that would be remembered as "THE BLOCK", well the sucker kept backing up and we were running out of real estate and time.  I threw what can only be described as the feeblest attempt of a block in football history.  I could have won and ESPY on Pathetic Blocks, if they existed then.  Mel scored the first score of the game and if my memory doesn't fail me as usual, it was the first one of our Championship Season.  He started it all off with a bang and in Mel Knopp fashion...flash!  I will miss you comrade and will see you all too soon.  Rest in Peace!
