Dear Classmates,
In today's Martinsville Bulletin an obituary was posted for the passing of another one of our classmates. You may not remember her, as she went to Carlisle before she graduated as a senior with us. Kathy Turner died in June after battling cancer for three years. Here is the information from her obituary:
Catherine Denise Turner, lovingly known as Cathy, passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. She was 64 years old.
Cathy was born on September 20, 1960, in Martinsville, Virginia, to James ("Jimmy") Turner and Marilyn Walker Turner. She is survived by her devoted mother, Marilyn, and her brothers, David Turner (wife, Tracy Engel Turner) and Michael Turner (wife, Debbie Vogelsong Turner). She was the fun aunt to six nieces and nephews and a beloved great-aunt to one great-niece and two great-nephews.
From a young age, Cathy excelled academically. She attended Carlisle School and was then a 1978 graduate of Martinsville High School where she graduated top of her class. She then attended James Madison University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Communications and Spanish with a minor in French. She was also on the Dukette dance team which performed at halftime for the university's basketball and football games.
Cathy's professional journey was as dynamic and vibrant as she was. She began her career in Chicago, Illinois, working at the corporate offices of the Vie de France bakery. Later, her adventurous spirit took her to Palm Beach, Florida, where she thrived as a Century 21 realtor. She eventually returned closer to home in High Point, North Carolina, working as a leasing and property manager while spending treasured time with her family.
Her love for South Florida never waned, and in 2001 she returned to Palm Beach, where she continued her career in real estate and also worked at the Palm Beach Kennel Club. In later years, Cathy found deep fulfillment in education, sharing her love of language and culture as a Spanish teacher for Broward County Schools. Her students remember her not only for her knowledge, but also for her kindness, patience, and encouragement.
Cathy will be remembered for her intelligence, independence, and determination, as well as her love of family and dedication to the people she cared about. No matter where she lived she always made it a point to call her mother regularly. Though her earthly journey has ended, her memory and influence will live on in the countless lives she touched.
A private family gathering will be held in her honor.
