MANDELBAUM, DONALD M., M.D., retired Radiologist, devoted husband of Rochelle "Shelley" for 47 years, Father of Aimee (Dr. Craig) Segal, Marc (Melinda) Mandelbaum and Marcie Zeitlin and loving Granddaddy to Tyler, Lexi, Jorgi, Hannah, Amanda, Shayna, passed away on 15 October 2009, after a courageous 2 year battle with brain cancer. He was 69 years old. Don is predeceased by his Mother, Helen and his Father, Milton, who moved to Dade County in 1970. He is survived by his brother Kenneth (Susie) Mandelbaum and sister Laurie Goldberg. He is also survived by his Mother-in-law, Ruth E. Davis, and sister-in law, Debbie (Lenny) Silver, brother-in- law David (Bonnie) Davis, and nieces Kira (Aaron) Zimmerman, Nina (Matt) Thatcher, Ari and Stephen Finkle, Jeffrey (Simone) Mandelbaum, and several grand nieces and grand nephews. Born in New York city Don moved with his family to Troy, New York. After graduating valedictorian from Troy High School where he broke every academic record, Don did his pre-med studies at Harvard University, graduating cum laude in 1961. He earned his medical degree in 1965 at NYU Medical School where he served as a class president. A member of AOA he was also awarded the AOA prize given to the top 3 students in the graduating class. Don did his Internal Medicine internship and one year Internal Medicine residency at Albert Einstein, Bronx Municipal Hospital Center, Bronx, NY. He served with the U.S. Army, awarded a National Defense Service Medal. before beginning his 3 year diagnostic radiology residency at Yale University. In 1972 Don moved with Shelley and his family to Hollywood, Florida, to join the radiology practice of Capi, Avallone, Klein. The county grew and the successful radiology practice became Radiology Consultants. Don was an avid sports fisherman. Many of his trophies decorate his home. He enjoyed traveling the world by land and by sea with his wife and travel consultant, Shelley. Even while sick he was able to enjoy a cruise. Don had 2 great loves outside his family, reading and traveling. Don was a philanthropic especially with his family. He was a member of Temple Sinai Hollywood. Broward County Public Library. Shelley would like to say "THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart" to our supportive families, friends and neighbors and to all of the kind and caring physicians, and their teams of nurses, aides, PT and OT experts, speech therapists, social workers, pharmacists, psychologists, and home health agencies and many others who filled Don and Shelley with HOPE enabling him to enjoy a good quality of life and survive more than two years. Don's kind and skilled caregivers, "angels from heaven," were always with him from the time he was stricken and the family is very much appreciative to all.
