My father didn’t want another Archibald (he was Archibald Kendall Roberts, Jr. 1907-1954) so he took my mother’s maiden name of Kennedy to replace the Archibald in naming his new son. Thus I was baptized Kennedy Kendall Roberts.
I received an AB degree in Philosophy & Religion from Hamilton College in 1963. I also minored in music with cello, trumpet and voice.
I attended General Theological Seminary in Manhattan and received an L.Th. in 1967. Had I not insisted in interpreting the questions in Modern Theology in the traditional way, my degree would have been an S.T.B.(which is now a M.Div.) There had been a year off during Seminary when I worked in theater lighting and selling encyclopedias at the World’s Fair.
After seminary, I became a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Albany and then assigned as a Fifth Curate at St. John’s in Troy where I did clerical work.
This was followed by an assignment at a 250 square mile parish with Huletts Landing, Ticonderoga and Whitehall. Kennedy was ordained as a priest on Dec. 13, 1967, at Trinity Church (Episcopal) in Whitehall.
In June 1969, Kennedy was assigned as a priest to a six station parish centered in Cairo, NY.
After a year Kennedy took a job in an office of Secretary of the General Convention working in the Music for Liturgy section in Manhattan.
These were years of great turmoil in the Episcopal Church and Kennedy drifted away. He worked at piecework religious jobs and in a retail store.
In 1980 Kennedy became Priest in Charge and then Eighth Rector of the independent Church of the Holy Comforter (then Anglican but founded in 1859) in Poughkeepsie. In late May of 1978 Kennedy was made Canon to the Ordinary. He has not left that diocese although the name of the diocese has changed. He may now be called "The Very Reverend Canon Kennedy Roberts."
