David did teacher training in Aberdeen and took up a teaching post in Hulme Grammar, Oldham in 1973. He continued teaching in other schools but later worked for Sun Alliance.

He died in 2003 aged 56 survived by ex-wife Helen and his two children Sarah and Adam.
