Simon Guthrie

David Maltby (Simon) Guthrie FRSE. 1930-2000

Educated Christ's Hospital and U.C.L.; First Class Honours in Zoology, 1951 and Goldsmith's Prize which he spent on a cycling trip to North Africa, collecting rare insects for the British Museum. Assistant lecturer and lecturer, University of leicester, 1953-64; Aberdeen 1964-74; Professor of Zoology, University of manchester, 1974-1990. Research interests included regeneration of the C.N.S. of the insect Gerris, structure and function of the notochord of Amphioxus; neurophysiology and physiology of fish vision including single-cell recording from the optic nerve. Sabbatical breaks involved working at Tufts, Boston; Yale; New York Medical College and the marine laboratory at Banyuls-sur-mer.

During his years in Aberdeen he much enjoyed angling for sea-trout and salmon, particularly in the Ythan and Findhorn, and spending time with his family, walking and exploring the wildlife in Strathnairn and its environs.

It gave him great pleasure that when he left Aberdeen, the neurosciences niche was filled by Peter Fraser.

Simon lectured in the Zoology Dept. from 1964 to 1974. Sadly he died in 2000 but his wife,Marjorie, lives in a most beautiful location in Cumbria. She will be attending the Reunion with their daughter, Sarah, who followed her father's footsteps into Neuroscience.
