Ferdinand Ibabao - Class Of 1986 VIEW PROFILE

Ferdinand was part of the first casualities in the Green Zone in Iraq. The Green Zone was suppose to be a "safe" place where US Troops could visit and relax during their free time and feel safe.

The attack in the Green Zone was the first time bombers had gotten inside the 4-square-mile compound - surrounded by concrete walls, razor wire, sandbag bunkers and guard posts - and was the deadliest attack within the area since the U.S. occupation began in May 2003.

Ferdinand Ibabao, an employee of DynCorp security company, was killed in an explosion in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, Iraq, on Oct. 14, 2004. Ibabao had been a Guam police officer. He was 36.

We're dying in Iraq

I can't see what’s happening.
I'm not sure if it’s real.
The bomb has gone off.
And I think I was near.

I lay on the street.
Not sure if I'm alone
I though of my son
And prayed I was home.

Is this where I'm meant to die
Will God be with me?
Will my mother see my body?
Or is there nothing to see.

I hear other voices
But not sure what to say
Are they my enemy’s,
Or my brothers who died this way.

I'm not afraid to die.
I'm just sad not to see.
Iraqis loving freedom
As much as you and me.

When tomorrow starts,
And I'm not there to see.
Please understand
FREEDOME isn't free.

A wonderful man. A true hero.
I rode with Ferdinand almost everyday to school. He was a great human being.

The News:
I received the news the day my husband was settling down into our new home. We were still moving boxes around for loading and unloading. Once i got the news, i didn't want to believe it for a second! I was hoping it was wrong. The wrong guy. :"( I keep telling myself "Nah, nah...please, NOoo, not Ferdinand, it can't be, this is crazy!!" I went online to Google his death announcement it was true. I broke down badly. I went in my closet bent my head down on my knees and SOBBED endlessly. Believe me it took me 1 year to get over it. C'mon i see the guy everyday!!! We go to the same church at Nimitze. He was my transportation for godsake everyday to school. I was with Ferdinand all the time!!! ME!!!

When i came for a visit in 1996, i saw Ferdinand only 1 more time. This was prior he saw me with his cop mate. Down below is another memory story...lol. He asked me before leaving the church "Hey Chelle, how's college life up in Seattle for you?"...I told him with my honest answer "I've never touched Anthropology in my life...it's lots of term papers!"... Ferdinand teasingly said "Ha!ha!,,, Nerd-alert!!, i'm joking Chelle"...LOL. Although, he told me; "take it one step at time, college is a load of work for everyone, i know how you feel". That was the last conversation i had with Ferdinand at St. Andrews.

Ferdinand with connections: *GULP.
**The next memory i will hold close to my heart while visiting Guam was the same year of 1996 when i got pulled-over by 2 cops for speeding...lol. Both cops stopped me at Hyundai, Santa Rita before i was heading out our village. Never before in my life, i got terrified, therefore, not realizing i was speeding! If i recall, the speed limit in Hyundai is [35]. I told Ferdinand's copmate i was going [34]-or at least, i thought i was...LOL. Ferdinand's copmate told me that with his spedometer he said as quote; "no mam, it reads in my spedometer [45] and you were going faster than us"...lol.
Lo and behold, Ferdinand came out the police car, but i didn't know at the time it was him. As he approached my window, Ferdinand bent his head down to see who i was. OMG...it was so embarassing!! He was really, really shocked to see that it was me!! Ferdinand went..."oh, shit Michelle!!" He was laughing like a drunk old man in my face. He pointed his finger directly at my face. I'll never forget it.

I mumbled quietly to Ferdindand and said; "Ferd, get me out of this mess, please...please...please, do not leave!!". Ferd continoued on to laugh more, as if he couldn't stop laughing. His copmate was in the process to write me a speeding ticket slip. I remember I heard Ferdinand told his cop-friend "Let her go, she's a family-friend, i'll take care of her". Whew!! Mannn, all i have to say is Ferdinand saved my ass from paying $500.00!!

This is a special memory i keep with me everyday for the rest of my life. [Thankyou Ferdinand for your loving kindness every moment of it while i was with you. Thankyou, THANK YOUUuu FERD for saving my ass!!...lol.
You will be surely missed alot!!] I MISS YOU FERD!!!

I've known Ferdinand ever since elementary school. He was always happy and smiling and I don't think I've ever seen him mad. He was a great guy and I could not believe the news about him in Iraq. He risked his life protecting others in harms way. Rest in Peace Ferdinand! You are truely missed!
