In Memory

Jay Hertz (D. )

Jay D. Hertz passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at the age of 72. Jay was a lifelong resident of Albuquerque, and graduated from Highland High School in 1965, the University of New Mexico in 1969, and the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1972. Jay is survived by his wife, Helen Grevey; daughter, Abbi and son-in-law, David Kraus, and grandchildren, Mara and Judah; brother, John Hertz and sister-in-law, Lisa, and nephew, Jeffrey; sister, Ellen Davidson, niece, Amy, and nephew, Adam. Jay was a quiet person and a deep thinker. He was a respected lawyer with the firm of Sutin, Thayer & Browne in Albuquerque for 40 years. He served as the president of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque between 2003 and 2005. He was a devoted old car hobbyist and restorer, and delighted in describing the history of the items in his collection to visitors at his garage. He was also an enthusiastic student of classical guitar and an avid bicyclist. Jay’s compassion, love of family and friends, intellect, and keen sense of humor will all be deeply missed. Because of COVID-19 limitations, the Funeral Service was private. A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Contributions in Jay’s memory may be made to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Albuquerque, 5520 Wyoming Blvd. NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109.

From Ron Segal,

I lost my lifelong friend Jay Hertz to a bicycle crash today - two days after we rode the 35-mile Bosque Trail together.

I am heartbroken.

I was so sorry to hear of Jay’s passing.  Jay was the first boy I ever had a crush on.  He would walk me home from Monte Vista School every day.  My deepest sympathy goes to his family.  May God rest his soul🙏

There aren't many people that depart from my life that leave both a sense of loss and grief.  The older I get the more I understand sorrow.  Jay and I were friends from Jefferson; we vied for the honor of thinnest boys in our class.  Jay edged me out in that department.  Few men rate the moniker gentleman but Jay was definitely in that category.  He was also a gentle man;  John Donne was right in stating, "No man is an island, complete unto itself. " The loss of one, especially one like Jay, diminisheds us as a whole.  In law enforcement we have a saying that takes some of the edge off of the loss; "They died going forward."  Jay was that personality, moving forward in the love of his wife, family, friends, his car restoration and just about anything he put his hand to. At the reunion, I reacquainted with him and we have been corresponding for the last 8 years.  In a world marked by division, he was inclusive.  A rarity, and a pleasure to have as a friend.  Dear Helen, I'm so sorry for your loss...and ours.

Such a tragedy. Jay was just a kind, understated, hilariously funny, and intellectually gifted human being. I have so many wonderful memories of hanging out with Jay and Ron Siegel when we were kids. My sincere condolences to his family and many friends.

I am so heartbroken about the news of Jay.I always wonder why the good people leave first.I was at our 55th class reunion picnic when I heard the awful news.Jay and I went to Monte Vista,Jefferson and Highland together. My condolences to Helen and family.Thank you for your friendship all these years.I never saw him get mad or anything. He was one of the gentle bears of our class. He was always courteous and polite. We went to the same shows to show off our cars and Jay was always helping some one or giving them advice.Boy he knew his cars.He always had a smile. He was very interesting to listen too.He was a great role model and a friend to us all.May God rest his soul.

Jay Hertz was one of my closest high school friends.  He and I went to Monte Vista, Jefferson and Highland together. I was stunned and saddened to hear of his passing.  I have a lot of memories of the time we spent together:  flying model airplanes, working on cars, fishing at Storrie Lake with Jay's dad and a couple of his siblings, Jay driving me and another classmate home on the day President Kennedy was assassinated.  The world will be a poorer place without him.
