Larry Clinton Burnett

April 6, 1951September 7, 2021

Larry Clinton Burnett was born April 6, 1951 in Alice, TX to Clint and Jody Burnett. He died peacefully at home September 7, 2021 surrounded by his loved ones.

Larry attended William Adams High School in Alice and graduated in 1969. He excelled at sports and was named Most Outstanding Athlete his senior year. He attended Texas Tech University on a football scholarship and played center as a starter for two years. He felt privileged to have played in the Sun Bowl in 1972 and in the Gator Bowl in 1973.

After graduation, Larry, or Burn, as he was lovingly known, began a long career in the oil industry, first in Alice then in Katy, where he and his wife, Melanie, moved in 2000. Burn was well respected in the business community and was known for his honesty, integrity and humility.

He was active in several professional organizations and always enjoyed business sponsored golf tournaments, hunting trips and sporting clay shoots. He never lost his passion for sports, especially college football. Larry coached his sons in basketball and attended all of their football, baseball and basketball games. He was active in the Alice Athletic Booster Club and served as president. More recently, as “Papa,” he was on the front row at his granddaughters’ sporting events and school activities. Burn loved traveling, biking, hiking and dancing, among many other things. He was the life of the party with his dance moves. He loved playing board games with his granddaughters and exploring the beach with them. He was a whiz at crossword puzzles, and cryptograms. He could solve “Wheel of Fortune” faster than most of the contestants.

Larry is survived by Melanie, his beloved wife of 23 years; sons Jason (Annette) and Nick (Candi); granddaughters Riley and Zoey; sister Melissa (Steve) Bryant; niece Whitney (Mike) Fuentes; and nephew Taylor (Liz) Carlisle. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Marsha (Dean) Jackson, Marcy (John) Hitt, Melissa (Mark) Mellard; an uncle, Wayne Davidson, several cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, Ryker and Mason Smith (Candi’s children), and Niki Stewart Burnett, the mother of his sons. Larry was an amazing man and will be greatly missed by his family, friends and business acquaintances.

A private memorial service will be held for immediate family. Memorial contributions may be made to Houston Hospice or MDAnderson.
