May 08, 2007 1:00 AM

Jeffrey A. Berg, 44, died Sunday, May 6, 2007, at his home in Godfrey.

He was born Oct. 16, 1962, in Jerseyville to Otto F. Berg Jr. and Martha Darlene (Bailey) Berg.

He loved the life and music of the early 1800s. He was a member of the Piasa Black Powder Burners for several years before becoming a member of the original Colonial Fife and Drum Corps in Godfrey from 1975 to 1977. He later became a member of the Great River Fifes and Drums of Madison County, Ill., when it was formed in 1983.

He enjoyed biking, Nautilus and woodcarving with friends at the Alton Senior Center and the Jerseyville Library. He was an active member of the College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton.

A head trauma survivor, he met each challenge with endurance. He was a member of the Illinois and Missouri Head Trauma Associations and participated in the forming of a camp in Southern Illinois for individuals who sustained head traumas.

He enjoyed life, always had a smile, never knew a stranger and was always ready to help anyone in need. He will be missed very much by all whose lives he touched and remembered by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

He is survived by his parents; a brother, Bryan J. Berg; and two very special nephews, McKale F. and Mason R. Berg, both of Godfrey, whom he thought the world of and he spent many hours enjoying their company. He leaves many close cousins, uncles, aunts and special friends.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Godfrey, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. The Rev. George Humbert will officiate.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the College Avenue Presbyterian Church or a charity of one’s choice.
