       Daniel Wesley Baker Jr., 61, died Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, in Portland

TX from cancer. He died at home with family around him.  He was born April 28,

1942 in Alton, the son of the late Daniel Wesley and Gertrude (Gibbs) Baker Sr.

     A 1960  Alton High School graduate, he was a retired chief warrant officer in the

U.S. Navy and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and three Silver Stars. He

served in the Cuban crisis and did five 'tours of duty’ in Vietnam.

     After his  retirement from the  Navy, he sailed as a Merchant Marine for seven

years. 

      He held a master's degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A & I (A&M

now.) 

      He found happiness in later life with Virginia (Fay) Baker, whom he married in

1997 in Rockport TX.

      Surviving are his wife, Virginia; three sons by his first wife, Betty;  Brian Kelly

Baker of Dallas and JohnWayne Baker and Michael Sean Baker , both

of Virginia Beach, Va.;  a step-daughter, with Virginia, Carolyn Keyon of San

Antonio; two grandsons; two granddaughters; special nieces Karen Bellinger and

Jennifer Jones, both of Alton; special great-nieces Drew and Claire Bellinger and

Jordan Allen, all of Alton; three sisters,  Patricia Warren, Phyllis Huntsman and

Jackie Jones and her husband, "Uncle Bob" Jones, all of Alton; and a brother,

Dennis Baker of Alton.

       Services were at Limbaugh Funeral Home in Portland,Texas. Burial followed at

the San Patricio Memorial Gardens.

I sat next to Dan in a class, he was a good guy, friendly and yet somewhat quiet. You never know who will become a real American hero, and that is what he became. All of our service people are my heroes,but Dan stands out even in their ranks. Wish I could shake his hand,sorry he is not here with us.
