ALTON - Alice A. (Harris) Martin went home to be    with  the Lord Tuesday,    October 11, 2016,  at Robing Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Brighton, Illinois.

Alice was born January 31, 1941 in Oxford Mississippi to the late Mr. Anderson & Mable (Kimmons) Harris.

On February 7, 1964, Ms. Alice was united into Holy Wedlock with Douglas C. Martin and to this union were  born three children: Douglas,  Jon, and Carla.

Alice professed a hope in Christ at an early age. She was a member of Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was employed with the Alton Mental Health Center for 25 years. Her civil involvement included 4th Ward Alderman for the city of Alton for ten years, member of National Counsel Negro Women, and Coalition for Concerned Citizens.

She leaves to celebrate her lasting legacy: her husband, Douglas C. Martin, Sr.; son, Jon F. Martin; a grandson, Jon F. Martin, Jr.; extended family members, Jonathan and Janet Ngwa and their two children, Ketoura and Kwame; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Martin, Jr.; a daughter, Carla Martin; a sister, Frankie Alexander; and a brother, Joseph Brown.

Visitation will be  from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. service on Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at Monroe Memorial Church. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph's Cemetery. Bishop Samuel E. White will officiate.

Alice was a beautiful woman, inside and out. She contributed  much to her community and was dearly loved by her family and friends. I am saddened by her loss, but know that she is in heaven with our other class angels.
